Financial Words of Wisdom: J. PIERPONT MORGAN ON DISCIPLINE ******************* In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, Index Fund Advisors, Inc. is resurrecting insightful but largely forgotten quotes from the past. Each one conveys an important financial principle that remains just as relevant today as it was when it was uttered. Today's quote is from J. Pierpont Morgan, who was the de facto leader of Wall Street from the 1890s until his death in 1913. At the time, Wall Street was almost completely unregulated, but Morgan suppressed the worst behaviors of stock operators, which gave investors a brief respite from the Gilded Age dark arts. But it was J. Pierpont Morgan’s discipline that inspired today's quote. With this statement, Morgan described what is arguably the most costly of human instincts: ENVY. This vice compels us to mimic the behavior of our friends and neighbors after watching them profit from an investment -- often a speculative one. It is costly because the neighbor's windfall is often obtained from arriving early (frequently as a result of luck), and the opportunity to profit has evaporated by the time that followers join the frenzy. Such behavior has been the bane of investors for centuries -- whether it be tulips, canals, railroads, or dot-com stocks. Fortunately, simple awareness that this vice exists can help us avoid falling victim to it. Mark T. Hebner Wes Long Jesse Fulton #behavioralfinance #envy #herdbehavior

Joran Laird, Global Fixed Income Portfolio Specialist at T. Rowe Price, shared his thoughts at our Melbourne WealthLeaders Forum about the 3 things to remember about High Yield. ❝ Firstly, it’s delivered historically high, steady returns with moderate volatility. Importantly, those returns are driven by the collection, the reinvestment and the compounding of coupon. And thirdly, it acts as a diversifier to both risky assets and will enhance the returns of defensive assets. ❞ Shane Zabiegala, Jonathon Ross, Christine Tomkins, Amanda Borland Tim Townsend, Graeme Miller

Congrats Giles Henman, Chartered FCSI for 10 years with St. James's Place – Asia & Middle East. It is getting a little harder now to appear younger than you actually are (with all the wisdom!) 🤭 Anyway I completely agree with what Giles have shared here, time is the biggest mitigator of risk. If I may, I would also like to add "Diversification", especially across different markets and asset classes. By having different asset classes that are negatively correlated, it also helps in reducing risk and deliver better risk adjusted returns. #investment #retirementplanning #financialplanning #portfolio #cfp #certifiedfinancialplanner #diversification #eightwealthinternational
I have recently celebrated a Decade as a Partner of St. James's Place – Asia & Middle East - a lot has happened in that time both personally and for the world in general, we certainly live in interesting times… As I reflect on my 10-year journey with St. James’s Place, I’m reminded of a powerful lesson from the world of investing: consistency and time can lead to remarkable outcomes. Take Warren Buffett, for instance. When we look at his investment returns on a daily basis, they actually beat the market less than 50% of the time. Yet, when assessed over a decade, that figure rises to nearly 80%! This reinforces a crucial lesson for all investors – short-term fluctuations can often distract us from long-term goals. Throughout my years in this industry, I’ve witnessed many investors fall prey to behavioral mistakes, driven by emotions rather than strategy. The key takeaway? The biggest mitigator for risk has always been time. By allowing investments to compound and grow, we can weather the storm of market volatility. As we move forward, let’s embrace patience and trust the process. Here’s to another decade of helping clients navigate their financial journeys with wisdom and a long-term perspective! 💼✨ What has that got to do with the picture? Well apart from the fact that everyone likes cute rabbits, this particular rabbit is in his “Warren” enjoying a nice rabbit “Buffet” 🤷🏻♂️ #InvestmentWisdom #LongTermThinking #StJamessPlace #BehavioralFinance #WarrenBuffett
