At Orbitform, we pride ourselves on delivering cutting-edge solutions tailored to our clients' unique needs. A client presented us with an intricate challenge: forming two 1.875" (47.625mm) long rivets simultaneously, with a center distance of just 1.3" (33mm), to enhance cycle time and control forming force. Our initial concept involved a multi-point orbital head. However, the client required independent forming force monitoring for each rivet. Rising to the challenge, our engineering team developed a multi-spindle orbital head with integrated load cells in each spindle, ensuring precise control. Despite the tight 0.039" (1mm) gap between spindles, we achieved remarkable stability and accuracy. Key innovations included: 🔹 Guided Mechanism: Our standard powerhead's inherent clearance was stabilized with a specially designed guided mechanism, preventing flashing and ensuring consistent quality. 🔹 Dual Wedge Fixture: To address the bending tendency of the 1.875" rivets under pressure, we engineered a dual wedge mechanism that clamps and supports the rivets, maintaining their integrity throughout the forming process. This project exemplifies Orbitform's commitment to pushing the boundaries of assembly technology. Our multi-spindle orbital head met the client's specifications and set a new standard for precision and efficiency in rivet forming.
