POV: You’re the NYC Director of Rat Mitigation, making $160,000. I’m on a mission to build the world’s longest resume. This is what I learned while working as the “Rat Czar,” leading the charge against NYC’s most notorious and elusive residents: 1️⃣ Rats are masters of survival. Rats can fit through anything bigger than a quarter and chew through anything less strong than steel. They thrive in dense areas, burrowing in healthy soil near food sources. Understanding their behavior is key to reducing their population and staying one step ahead in this ongoing battle. 2️⃣ You can’t exterminate your way out of the problem. Rats are part of the urban ecosystem, and a promise of zero rats is unrealistic. Mitigation is about addressing the root causes, not just the symptoms. After all, rats are excellent at exposing our human downfalls which only helps them thrive. 3️⃣ Collaboration is the key to success. Fighting NYC’s rat problem requires a coordinated effort across city-owned properties, public spaces, and private buildings. Landlords are responsible for their properties and the sidewalks in front of them, but the city must also do its part in parks, streets, and other public areas while also patrolling private property to make sure everyone is doing their part.
