Did you know, the agriculture and agri-food sector in York Region is a powerhouse, contributing $3.8 billion in gross domestic product to the local economy and supporting over 67,000 jobs! Last week, York Regional Council approved the 2024 to 2027 Agriculture and Agri-Food Sector Strategy. As a crucial component of York Region’s economic vitality, the new strategy focuses on sustaining and supporting the entire local agri-food sector to enable the sector to thrive for years to come. Why Loving God Matters in Agribusiness As an AgriTechPrenuer, I've often been asked how my faith informs my approach to entrepreneurship. For me, loving and believing in God is essential to my work in agribusiness. When we acknowledge God's sovereignty over creation, we're reminded of our responsibility to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us. This means adopting sustainable agroecology practices that prioritize the well-being of both people and the planet. My faith motivates me to develop innovative solutions that promote food security, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. By combining technology and sustainable practices, we can create a more equitable and resilient food system. Finally, my faith guides me to operate with integrity, compassion, and fairness in all my business dealings. When we prioritize ethics and transparency, we build trust with our customers, partners, and communities. For me, faith and entrepreneurship are intertwined. By acknowledging God's sovereignty over creation, I'm reminded of my responsibility to be a good steward of the resources entrusted to me. Last month, iDE Kenya’s Team Leader, Geoffrey Nyamota (PhD) and iDE’s Director of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Global Business Development, Alexandra Spieldoch were invited by the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University to participate in the webinar: “How Innovations in the Food Sector Are Used to Create More Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems.” This unique session spotlighted real stories of food producers from across the globe, showcasing how innovation and entrepreneurship are driving resilience in communities both locally and internationally. Representing our Kenya program, Geoffrey shared the importance of creating access to appropriate technologies and services for farmers that would encourage them to grow drought-resilient crops to build resilience to climate change. “Products like sorghum, green gram, pigeon peas; crops that will work in areas where there is minimal amount of rain and minimal amount of nutrition from the soils to actually work. As the co-founder and CEO of Ayosifam Integrated Service Limited , Funmilayo Famuyiwa transforms cassava into high-quality products such as Garri, Lebu, cassava chips, and cassava flour while promoting sustainability and empowering smallholder farmers. Her journey is rooted in resilience and a passion for innovation. From supporting women in rural communities to leveraging clean energy in cassava processing, Funmilayo is on a mission to align her business with UN SDGs 2, 3, 12, and 13—ensuring food security, sustainability, and economic growth. Through partnerships with local farmers, government ministries, and global organizations, Funmilayo has achieved notable milestones, including winning the USAID/NIGERIA COVID-19 Food Security Challenge and securing multiple grants to scale her operations. Her advice to aspiring agribusiness entrepreneurs: "Start small but think big. Agriculture requires patience, persistence, and a commitment to sustainability. Build relationships, stay innovative, and always keep learning." Iona Thomas hosted positive discussions between AgriZeroNZ and an Innovate UK delegation on how UK & New Zealand innovators can collaborate to accelerate new tools to reduce agricultural emissions. AgriZeroNZ is a world-first partnership between the New Zealand government and major agribusiness companies to rapidly reduce emissions, and the UK delegation gained the benefit of insight from this Kiwi organisation with a global perspective. #Agritech is a rapidly growing sector, and teams from both countries see the efficiency and profitability gains in commercialising new technologies for uptake on-farm. Agritech is one of 5 priority themes in the UK / NZ Science Work Programme, and the UK in New Zealand policy, trade, climate change and science teams have worked for many years in this important cooperation theme, so it's amazing to see promising UK / NZ collaborations start to scale.
