University and Industry One of the items raised during this session was the #gaps between the course #contents at #universities, #colleges and the #industry needs. This has been going on for years if not decades. Almost everybody involved in the #academic world and industry sector knows, but the gaps remain if not widen. One of the approach mentioned was by getting the industry to work together with university for research works. This will only focus on certain area and not really tackling the knowledge/practice gaps issue. Meanwhile, there are Industry Advisory Panels (#IAPs) at universities, but have they been effective? Are these panels really playing their roles or just to make up the numbers or to meet with the requirements? Are the panel members selected or appointed based on realistic #competency or just by some recommendations... I have been on IAPs myself before and from my observations, there are still a lot of works required to get the right IAP for the issue to be addressed satisfactorily. Any of you, IAP member care to share your views here?

GrantsNow is designed to pinpoint the specific involvement of other Higher Education Institutes within your research projects. https://lnkd.in/dU2Brsef For instance, if your institute is sponsoring an internal project, GrantsNow can recognize other Higher Education Institute as an option via sub proposals, ensuring clear, accessible records for their contribution to the FEC or other costing models. Beyond this, our system leverages 'dynamic forms' capable of capturing additional data regarding other institute's project involvement, such as the role of collaborator, and more. By embodying the essence of adaptability, GrantsNow puts the focus where it belongs: on your institute's valuable contributions. https://lnkd.in/dmk-dE86

Yesterday, I was privileged to attend the TEQSA 2024 Conference as a student delegate on behalf of Monash University and as President of the Monash Graduate Association. Our Higher Education sector faces significant change: from employment insecurity and financial concerns related to proposed caps on international enrolments, to the impact of AI and academic integrity. These and many other factors have led to critical questions about the purpose and future of our universities. As I wrap up my thesis and reflect on the PhD journey with my peers, the immense sacrifice and challenge are difficult to overlook. Throughout my candidature, I have advocated for positive and sustainable change that deeply recognises the importance and value of the student experience. Although conversations about student experience often focus on education and campus community, for PhDs, the experience is intimately tied to the financial realities of surviving on the RTP Stipend. Speaking with our Minister of Education, I expressed deep concerns about our ability to recruit the best and brightest to undertake critical research when they are expected to live on just over two-thirds of the national minimum wage. Few of my friends would consider a PhD when they can earn the entire value of the RTP Stipend in a little over a years’ work in consulting or industry. A year ago, I highlighted the unsustainability of our current path - and the need for immediate change has only grown. To keep higher education accessible, we must build fairer, more equitable structures that support everyone.

The new rector of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), who took office on 1 July, has started his work with tremendous momentum. By his own admission, Hassan Charaf Hassan doesn't like to put off getting things done. In an interview with ITBUSINESS, he spoke frankly about the university's problems: the controversies surrounding the change of model, challenges with R&D&I and industrial relations and the outdated education methods. #itbusiness #bme #hassancharaf #english

Why Students Should Take the GRE (And Why In Paris Stopped Offering GMAT Prep) At MBA Center Paris, Europe’s largest test prep center with over 400 GRE/GMAT students, we stopped preparing students for the GMAT to focus solely on the GRE. Here’s why: -GRE’s Versatility Business schools and a broad range of graduate programs widely accept the GRE. For students applying to both non-business Master’s programs and MBAs, the GRE offers more flexibility, making it a more versatile choice. -Easier Math and Familiar Content The GRE’s math section is generally more accessible, focusing on high school-level topics, unlike the GMAT’s more difficult Data Sufficiency questions. The GRE also emphasizes vocabulary and reading comprehension, which many students find more approachable compared to the GMAT’s focus on critical reasoning and logic. -More Forgiving Test Format The GRE adapts section-by-section, which creates a less stressful experience. On the GMAT, each question adapts based on your previous answer, making it feel more punishing and intense. This section-based adaptation makes the GRE less mentally exhausting. -Industry Shift Towards GRE While business schools claim to be test-neutral, we’ve noticed that more students prefer the GRE for its broader applicability. The GRE is gaining popularity due to its more accessible content and structure. At MBA Center Paris, we believe it’s a better investment of time and energy for most students. Our decision reflects student demand and the growing trend in graduate admissions, where the GRE is now often the preferred option. Dr Huber +33 7 50 57 84 44

QS or Quacquarelli Symonds ranking for universities has been around for only 20 years now. Do you remember the Higher Education world before the QS-THE ranking? It was a very different world. Now, the higher education sector is increasingly reliant on QS ranking, to the extent that ranks can tank an institution's financial health. Universities are a place for critical thinking, but when it comes to ranking, the sector has collectively failed to educate the international stakeholders. Healthy competition and trying to improve the quality of offering for research and teaching is not a harmful thing but when the diverse ranges of activities offered by an institution is boiled down to simple ranks that is not helpful!
