Journey of Wellness-As caregivers, we pour our hearts and souls into supporting others, often neglecting our own well-being in the process. It's time to shift that narrative. Wellness is not just a destination; it's a journey of nourishing your body, mind, and spirit every single day. Every small step we take towards self-care is a testament to our commitment not only to ourselves, but also to those we care for. Prioritizing our own wellness allows us to show up fully, with energy and compassion. Here are a few practices to consider in your daily routine: 1. Mindful Moments: Carve out a few minutes each day for meditation or deep breathing to center yourself. 2. Active Nourishment: Fuel your body with nutritious foods that energize you and keep you vibrant. 3. Seek Support: Connect with fellow caregivers or join support groups to share experiences and gain strength from one another. 4. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when needed; your time and energy are precious. 5. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge your efforts, no matter how small. Every step counts! Let's commit to this journey together. By taking care of ourselves, we enhance our capability to care for others. Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Dear Caregiver, We see you, and we care about you. In times of high stress, self-care can feel out of reach, but it’s still so important. Here are a few gentle suggestions for when you’re feeling overwhelmed. ↳ Be active: Find activities you enjoy like walking, dancing, gardening, or playing with a pet. Even short exercise helps. ↳ Prioritize sleep: Try for 7-9 hours each night. Create a bedtime routine and stick to a regular sleep schedule. ↳ Reduce stress: Explore relaxation techniques like meditation, tai chi, or yoga. Utilize free apps for guided meditations or listening to relaxing music. ↳ Make time to decompress: Do something you enjoy weekly that’s just for you, like catching up on a TV show, reading, dancing, drawing, or another hobby. ↳ Keep up with your health: Your health is just as important as the one you are caring for. Don’t skip your doctor’s visits. Let them know you’re a caregiver—and see if they know of any local resources. ↳ Reach out for support: Talk to family, friends, or a therapist. Join a caregiver support group, online or in-person. ↳ Take a break if you need it: Ask someone to step in, hire an aide, or ask for help for a few hours of relief. ↳ Be kind to yourself: You don’t have to pretend to be cheerful all the time. Feelings of sadness, frustration, and guilt are normal and understandable. Express your feelings by writing in a journal or talking with a friend. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it's necessary. Your well-being matters, and by prioritizing your own health, you're better equipped to care for others. You're doing important work, and you deserve support and compassion too. Have you heard of the Wheel of Self-Care? It is a tool designed to help you to identify the areas of your life that are working well and recognise if there are any that would benefit from more attention. I.e. if one of the domains has very little colour on the wheel, it is indicating that it’s an area that you don’t prioritise. So ask yourself is this because it’s not important/ necessary for me or would I benefit from focusing on it more? Reviewing if your life is going as you consciously want it to and if self care is featuring enough can be really important to wellbeing We hope you find it useful 😀 #mentalhealthawarenessweek #selfcare

24th July is International Day of Self Care - as a symbol that the benefits of self-care are experienced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The visible parts of my self care today included: Seeing a friend 🙋🏻♀️ Going for a walk 🚶♂️ Green space 🌳 Coffee ☕️ The invisible aspects of my self care included: Recognising my depleting energy levels 🪫 Giving myself permission to take some time out ✔️ Putting time boundaries in place to enable this ⏰ As a carer, asking for & arranging support 🤲🏼 It is often the ” invisible” aspects of self care that can be more challenging to achieve, yet can make the biggest difference. P.s. Hand on heart, my self care isn’t always the best (as is the case with a lot of us in the caring professions, I am sure) but I have definitely become more comfortable with prioritising it. Having regular supervision, in which wellbeing is a prioritised topic, definitely helps & is something I strive to replicate when supervising others.
