Love to see our very own outstanding, stellar, capable, west-coast based, Vancouver City Councillor Rebecca Bligh as the new Federation of Canadian Municipalities President Huge congrats to Rebecca for all of the hard work it has taken to get to this point Joel Grenz and I are committed to bringing our local government perspectives to our respective FCM committee appointments. Together, we will work diligently to support FCM’s ongoing advocacy to the federal government for a Municipal Growth Framework that addresses the rising infrastructure costs faced by communities today Property taxes are local governments’ primary tool for financing infrastructure, but they aren’t enough to meet all the demands. Local governments manage 60% of Canada’s infrastructure, yet collect only 10% of the taxes, mostly through property taxes The problem with property taxes is that they are not based on the ability to pay, so in that respect they are regressive - many of those affected are low-income or average earners, who will be forced into debt or to sell Meanwhile, provincial and federal governments have access to a wider range of progressive, ability-based taxation methods It’s time for provincial and federal governments to step up and provide more funding to address the growing infrastructure needs of our communities https://lnkd.in/g8gyjfjV
We are pleased to share that Rebecca Bligh will be stepping in as FCM’s President, effective immediately. Rebecca is a dedicated community leader in Vancouver, and we look forward to her leadership in the vital year ahead for local government in Canada. A big thank you to Geoff Stewart for his dedication to municipal priorities these past few months.

CONFLICT RESEARCH: JIM CROW AND SLAVERY NOW POSITIVE BY REPUBLICANS? https://lnkd.in/g5eJQWX2 #ByronDonalds names #JimCrowNostalgia by #AfricanAmericans. Segregation is the action of separating people, historically based on race and/or gender. Segregation implies the physical separation of people in everyday activities, professional life, and civil rights. Under Jim Crow: 1. Limited Educational Opportunities: There are limited higher education institutions for African Americans, restricting their access to advanced education and professional careers. https://lnkd.in/gEmEuy57 2. Degrading Treatment: Segregated facilities were not only separate but often designed to reinforce notions of racial inferiority and second-class citizenship.https://youtu.be/xLYmNQstnoM 3. Grandfather Clauses and White Primaries: Laws and practices that effectively excluded African Americans from participating in the electoral process. https://lnkd.in/gfz2UWCT 4. Sharecropping and Debt Peonage: Many African Americans in the South were trapped in exploitative economic arrangements that kept them in a cycle of poverty and debt. https://lnkd.in/gM26R96p 5. Public Housing Segregation: Government policies that segregated public housing projects and maintained racially homogeneous neighbourhoods. 6. Convict Leasing: A system where African Americans were arrested on minor charges and then leased out to work for private businesses under brutal conditions akin to slavery.https://youtu.be/kTKB5O9ryws 7. Social Etiquette and Norms: Enforced codes of conduct that dictated subservient behaviour from African Americans towards whites, perpetuating racial hierarchies and social inequality. 8. Medical Experimentation: African Americans were sometimes subjected to unethical medical experiments and were often neglected or mistreated within the healthcare system. What does it mean to work together? To create impact together? To make a neighbor feel they are part of something bigger than themselves? We ask ourselves these questions as we look back and ahead at the opportunity to create meaningful impact for our city, our region and the place we affectionately call home… together. In 2023, we re-engaged in activities that promote moving Atlanta forward. Read more about it all in our 2023 Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/ef_Kkz5a

I saw this and had to share it. When an Italian mayor faced criticism about his weight, he didn’t respond with anger or defensiveness. Instead, he found a creative solution that brought his community together—inviting residents to join him on 4 mile walks up and down the vineyards through stunning Italian countryside. What started as a personal goal to improve his health has grown into a movement, with nearly 100 people now hiking alongside him. It’s a reminder that leadership is not just about policies; it’s about setting an example and turning challenges into opportunities. These hikes have become more than just a path to better health—they’ve opened up a space for dialogue between the mayor and his constituents. Residents are using the time to discuss their own health journeys and engage in one-on-one conversations about political issues that matter to them. This initiative is a powerful demonstration of how empathy and community-driven leadership can strengthen bonds and make a difference on both a personal and local level. This approach can inspire anyone facing criticism or personal challenges. Instead of reacting negatively, consider turning the issue into an opportunity for growth, just like the mayor did. Whether it's organizing a community activity or involving others in your goals, you can create a support system that benefits everyone. By combining personal development with community engagement, you can tackle challenges head-on while building meaningful connections with those around you. https://lnkd.in/e8mrCnby
