Today, November 20, we celebrate World Children’s Day, a global day of action for children’s rights that serves as a reminder to advocate for the well-being, education, and protection of children around the world, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. It also marks the anniversary of two significant milestones in child advocacy: • The adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. • The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history. For more information on these milestones, visit: https://lnkd.in/gaWZvd68 World Children’s Day reminds us that every child deserves a voice, safety, and a bright future. It’s a call to action for governments, communities, and individuals to work together to address issues like poverty, inequality, and access to education. Let’s create a world where every child can grow up healthy, happy, and hopeful. #WorldChildrensDay #ForEveryChild #ChildrensRights #FutureGeneration #HopeForChildren

As a collective, we believe the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in child protection systems is the most urgent and important issue our sector faces. Despite the end of forced removal policies in 1969, First Nations children face disproportionate separation from their families, surpassing rates of the Stolen Generations. However, the solution cannot be dictated by non-Indigenous organisations. Holistic services and responses by be centred in self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, ensuring that children experience their right to grow and thrive within their cultural heritage, community, and kinship networks. In our statement of commitment, Allies for Children recognises the urgent need for action. Our commitment rests on three pillars: MODEL: We're implementing internal changes guided by Indigenous governance, fostering partnerships for cultural responsiveness. INFLUENCE: Sharing learnings and encourage other organisations to participate in supporting community controlled organisations. ADVOCACY: Investing in advocacy efforts to prevent children and families entering care. Our Statement https://lnkd.in/ggRcapMD #aboriginalchildren #selfdetermination #communityled

2024: A Year of achievement and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations have made significant strides this year: Community-controlled health organisations delivered 3.6 million instances of care, with innovative approaches in antenatal, preschool, and chronic health areas. A landmark agreement now ensures more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home care are placed with family or culturally connected carers. Communities in the NT successfully advocated for a $4 billion investment in remote housing. Coalition of Peaks Lead Convenor, Pat Turner, joined Larissa Behrendt on ABC’s Speaking Out to reflect on 2024’s achievements and the challenges ahead. The Family Matters 2024 Report, released yesterday, highlights the urgent need for change to address the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in child protection systems. “Since 2016, these reports have highlighted that Aboriginal children have a right to be raised in community, in culture, and safely within their own families,” said Deirdre CHEERS, CEO of Barnardos Australia. Featuring Aboriginal-led case studies and key recommendations, the report calls for increased support for Aboriginal-Community Controlled Organisations (ACCCO's), community-led decision-making, and national standards for the Child Placement Principle. Barnardos stands with SNAICC - National Voice for our Children in advocating for these vital changes. In NSW, Barnardos is working strongly in successfully transferring Indigenous children in care to ACCO'S.

The promotion and protection of children's rights is embedded in Article 3(3) of the Treaty on European Union. Article 24 of the #Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, meanwhile, recognises that #children are entitled to 'protection and care as is necessary for their well-being'. Over the years, the EU has moved from a sectoral approach towards a more coherent policy approach. Whereas initially, children's rights were developed in relation to specific areas, such as the free movement of persons, since 2000 the EU has taken a more coordinated line. The EU has its own legal and policy framework on children's rights and #child protection, as well as an overall strategy. International Children's Day is celebrated on 1st June and Universal Children's Day is on 20th November and in Sri Lanka it is celebrated on 1st October every year. On the occasion of this day, to emphasize the need to protect children, the President's Secretariat launched a program called "Protect children by law". So pleased and grateful to share the work that our amazing global partner Save the Children International does to end corporal punishment all over the world! 🙏 🙌 Save the Children has been working towards eliminating all forms of corporal/physical and humiliating punishment of children in the home, schools and all other settings for over 25 years. They believe that banning such violence is essential to bring an end to all forms of violence against children as well as ensuring that national child protection systems have a clear legal foundation on which to base interventions. Save the Children’s approach to end all corporal/physical and humiliating punishment of children is to establish or strengthen rights-based national child protection systems that recognize the State’s responsibility and human rights obligations to children and provide governments with coordinated and sustainable ways to protect children. Within this holistic approach Save the Children places emphasis on four pillars: Legal reform; Awareness raising for social change; Parenting/positive discipline; and Child participation. In the article below you can read about some of Save the Children’s strategies to end corporal punishment: · Prioritising child participation in ending corporal punishment · Supporting advocacy on the International Day to hashtag #EndCorporalPunishment · Working to end corporal punishment through a targeted national strategy · Ending violent punishment through the Safe Families parenting programme · Ending violence against children in and through education They have kindly described their work to end corporal punishment, and we hope this article is helpful to others: https://lnkd.in/e27dHW9t Save Jordan Save the Children UK Save the Children Switzerland Dominique Pierre PLATEAU
