An interesting analysis around the inherent segregation involved in the creation and maintenance of public and “member-only” swimming pools. It’s so easy to use the phrase “playing the race card” but it is much harder to say “protecting institutionalized racism” for most people. This is a clear and shining example of institutionalized racism and the lengths that some people go through just to make sure that they don’t have to swim with Black and Brown people.

The independent prosecutor, in his interim report into the World Anti-Doping Agency’s handling of the 23 positive Chinese swimmers in 2021, found ‘no irregularity’, no evidence to suggest interference or meddling, and that the chances of successfully appealing the contamination scenario at the Court of Arbitration for Sport were ‘if not nil, at the very least almost non-existent’. For those who want to be able to quote the actual report rather than the headlines that will come from it, there is a link obtained in the WADA post below. Given the anti China sentiment around this story, there will be few in the media that report the facts as they currently are, and many who will now criticise the interim report from the independent investigator because it has not identified any fault on WADA’s handling of the case. WADA President, Witold Banka, said, “Now that it has been confirmed…there was no impropriety connected to WADA’s handling of the case, the Agency will consider with external legal counsel what measures can be taken against those that have made untrue and potentially defamatory allegations. These allegations have been extremely damaging to WADA’s reputation and to the confidence and trust that athletes and other stakeholders have in the Agency and in the global anti-doping system.” #WADA #doping #antidoping #China #swimming #Olympics #Paris2025 #WorldAquatics https://lnkd.in/gbDy5TmT
Independent Prosecutor concludes WADA showed no bias towards China and decision not to appeal Chinese swimming cases was ‘indisputably reasonable’

Swimming How many black adults and children that can swim ? I probably gues not that many.. Let me tell you why ….. So prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, 95% of Black adults and 80% of Black children did not participate in swimming activities regularly, compared to 89% of White British adults and 71% of White British children. The truth is stark: a prevailing stigma suggests that swimming is a skill beyond the reach of the Black community. But this is more than a mere oversight; it’s a dangerous neglect of a life-saving skill. Let’s break the cycle of this disparity. So how can we improve this …? Let’s shatter the stigma. Join me in promoting swimming lessons in our communities. It’s not just about fun – it’s about empowering us all and it is also important for community to access to vital water safety and drowning prevention education. This includes understanding what to do in an emergency, as well as the potentially lifesaving benefits of being able to swim. #SwimmingEquality #WaterSafety #CommunityEngagement 🏊♂️🌊

Very good lesson we can learn from this.
Chief Officer: Integrated Marketing & Innovation. GIBS MBA. PGDip (Top Student & Cum Laude) UFS. Keen interest in consumer behaviour. Behavioural Economics. Award-winning, published photographer (Rooi Rose, Idees)
Lesson learnt from Tatjana Smith…. Unlike her counterparts in the 100m her build was more slight and petite, but never underestimate heart. The South African flag did not show in the pool (at least third place) until about 65 meters into the race. She was behind most of the race. She however has something we South Africans know so well, a fighting spirit. She gave everything she had in those last seconds to WIN a gold medal. Her words afterwards is that she is really experiencing JOY in swimming again. So her WHY was important to her. What can we take out of this? 1. Do not look around you, the size of your competitor does not matter. 2. It is not over, until it is over. 3. A big heart and a fighting spirit matter until the end. 4. The WHY is important, so that you know why NOT to give up. What a beautiful lesson en metaphor for us all. May we learn more lessons like this. Well done to the Blits Boks and Alan Hatherly.

Academic outreach takes many forms. One great example is using an interview about a thing that is currently 'in the news' to inform people about facts that are common knowledge within your field of science, but not outside of it. We are therefore very happy with the interview that our colleague Anne Baar and our former colleague Tim van Emmerik (now at Wageningen University) gave to the Volkskrant on the water-velocity of the river Seine that the Olympic swimmers will encounter during the Olympic games. The 'hydrograph' shows everyone both how much water this river transports: 500 m3 per second or one Olympic swimming pool every five seconds, three times the average for this this of year. The graph also shows how much that can change from year to year and day to day (as low as 100 m3/s or as high as 1600 m3/s). link to the interview (in Dutch) https://lnkd.in/e2jK8Sd8 #olympic #swimming #water #watermanagement #news
