Our innovation team conducted workshops for a strategic alignment project covering open innovation, digital transformation, and customer centricity. We begin by immersing participants in the world of innovation with examples of innovative cities/constructions, followed by exploring different 'thinking modes' - individual and collective. To put theory into practice for collective thinking, we employ the famous '6 hats' approach. While refining this part of the workshop, I thought: Why not combine the two? The outcome: A 1-hour group game where participants use the 6 hats approach to tackle different elements of a city: Theme, Energy source, Transport system, and Environment (geographical). Part 3 of a RevEv discussion: And beyond this: organizations require decision making that ensure long-term relevancy, not just next quarter’s results. Our product is an immersive, rigorous strategy tool that specifically shows clients how to make executable decisions today to hedge against volatile future contexts. The Reverse Evolution Strategy Game will reveal to a client and its audience how to: Test scenarios. Deal with unimagined surprises. Survive a glancing blow, instead of being consumed by a body blow. Reveal gaps in current strategy. Bias leadership toward execution. Compensate for shifting conditions without whipsawing. Immerse the team in a rigorous, safe testing environment: hardcore training that’s effective and efficient. Employ substantial leave behinds: how to set conditions, a decision model, an information management model, setting conditions software You might think: yeah, yeah, yeah...wargaming. Done it. Provides a study that sits on a shelf. Makes people touch antennae. That’s because traditional gaming methods use the “past is prologue” approach sprinkled with a few differences. In fact, it’s even worse than that. Traditional wargames: seek to predict outcomes are based on an extrapolation from “today’s” world add in a few random twists and turns are okay for near-term, well defined problems feed a linear view of one future timeline...to keep players in their comfort zone Traditional games are designed around extrapolating technology and current events along fairly predictable trajectories (again: the past is mostly prologue). There are nuances and, at times, disruptions inserted, but collectively, traditional “wargames” seek to predict the future, achieve a degree of equilibrium, or build a playbook for a near-term horizon. For a complex organization, such things are necessary but not sufficient. Traditional games try to tell players what to do, not how to it effectively. In complex operational environments, there is substantial risk and uncertainty. Major “investment” decisions (in people, technologies, infrastructure, etc.) require significant capital expenditure (financial and political), having very lengthy ROI periods. Let me tell you how RevEv (our term for the Reverse Evolution Strategy Game) is different in the next post.
