Hi all, I'm hoping to crowdsource some info! Does anyone know of any training courses on #qualitative research methods suitable for PhD students - ideally in Ireland but open to UK/online? Many of us (myself included) find themselves working full-time during their PhD studies, and whether that is an academic job, or not, it is often tricky to juggle the demands of two hefty undertakings. So Dr Junior Oliveira de Almeida will join us to reflect on his experience doing just that, and how he survived it! 🎅December: it's the season for rest, recuperation, and family. Yet many of ECAs, especially those who teach (!), look at this period as an opportunity to tackle unfinished business. But we know it's important to take time for one's self, to switch off (at least for a bit), and not get sucked into the academic/research backlog during the holidays. We will be joined by Dr. Chris James Carter who will share tips and sage advice reflecting on his days as a busy early career academic! How can we move towards balanced academic careers, which take into account the variety of university missions? 🎓⚖️🔬 Over the past year, EUA has launched two activities aiming to gather data and examples of practice in this area. As a co-chair of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (#CoARA) Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment, and as the coordinator of an Erasmus+ project ‘Staff development for learning and teaching at European universities’ (#STAFFDEV_EU). 🧑🏫📊 As such, two surveys conducted in 2024, respectively on academic career assessment reform initiatives and staff development offered to enhance learning and teaching, have gathered data from higher education institutions as well as research organisations. In addition, EUA has established its own Task and Finish Group on Academic Careers, which will guide the Association’s future work in this area. 📋🔍 During this webinar, EUA experts will offer insights from data collected from ongoing and planned reform initiatives, and discuss recognition measures through careers and what universities offer to support professional development, especially in learning and teaching. 💻💡 Participation is free of charge and open to all. I was asked yesterday if ARC Industry Fellowships were more competitive than DECRAs. Would you advise an early career researcher to pursue one or the other?   DECRA success rates in 2024 were at 19.6% (up from 15% in 2023). There were 200 approved, from 1023 submissions. IE24 success rate was 27% and 50 were funded, from 185 applications.    IE24 submissions dropped from 359 in 2023 to 185 in 2024. DECRA application rates also fell from 1335 in 2023 to 1023 in the 2024 round.   Implications? Fewer people applying to the industry fellowship schemes opens up opportunity. But we also know that to be competitive for industry fellowships, you have to have a long-term and convincing industry partnership and plan, aligned to national priorities and the scheme criteria. You also need to show that your collaboration in research with your partners will leverage university expertise to solve a really important problem, so that the partnership has impact and national benefit.     The Discovery and the Linkage fellowships are very different. But we do see people developing parallel but different applications and being successful in the Discovery scheme (Laureate for instance), strengthened by the thinking they did about impact and benefit, when developing an ARC industry fellowship.    What would others recommend?
