It was a great pleasure speaking with Leslie Shannon, Head of Trend and Innovation Scouting at Nokia, on the concept of Virtual Natives as part of the Global Innovation Forum (GIFLondon) #GIFSPARX series. Virtual Natives are not a new concept to me, but perhaps new to many of you. This is a fascinating cohort who live, work, and play differently to many others, including the Digital Natives of the early 00s. I see how they can be overlooked by companies as not fitting the corporate mould, but I believe they are the key to the future of innovation and ultimately business success. One of the things that really hits home is how the class divide will widen for those without access to the latest technology. I think this will be particularly true in D&E markets where limited internet access has the potential to hold back entire generations from the success they crave. I've even seen traits of my daughter's inner VN. As far back at one year old, even before she could speak, she was engaging with magazines and books as if they were phone screens, attempting to scroll and swipe images across the pages. It can't help but leave me thinking, what will the future look like for not just this ever expanding cohort, but for those who fail to embrace change and technology.
