Thank you Anirban Mukhopadhyay for the invitation to talk about the hard realities of translational research and clinical deployments, whether it be in pathology, radiology, or surgery. Special shout-out to my mentors, Arie Kaufman and Travis J. Hollmann, MD, PhD, for keeping me clinically grounded and patient-focused. Data quality, trust, trust, (and trust), user interface/experience design (human-computer interaction), analytical/clinical validation, real-world evidence (NOT artificial assumption-laden benchmarks), silent deployments, path to reimbursement, regulatory approval at the State- or Federal-level, post-deployment monitoring, business justification (return-on-investment) etc are some of the components we should be thinking about day in and day out. Some of the fields such as "#digitalpathology are in existential crisis" (quote credit Sandro Santagata) if we don't ground ourselves in current clinical realities and show the value NOW rather than 10 years later; #digitalpathology is a "nice-to-have" not a "must-have" right now and we need to rethink slide digitization workflows for wider adoption (shameless plug to our #MICCAI2024 paper [https://lnkd.in/ejV8rqzB], to be presented by Zehra Talat in Marrakesh, Morocco).
