When a child is born with a disability, or acquires one, it deeply affects the family, often changing their dynamics and routines significantly. This means the focus is on the well-being of the child with a disability and can sometimes result in their siblings feeling overlooked. This is an important and relevant topic for many of the families we support. As part of this, we asked Senior Associate, Helen Hammond, to share insights from her upbringing with a disabled sibling. Shedding light on the resources and organisations that provide support and guidance for families facing similar circumstances. https://lnkd.in/e39gthV3 #ChangingLives #DisabilityAwareness #SiblingSupport #FamilySupport #MedicalNegligence #ClinicalNegligence #BirthInjury #BrainInjury

This article resonates with me on a very personal level. Both of my siblings have disabilities and it certainly changes the way you experience things as a child, and usually results in you having a lot more responsibility than the average child at your age. However, a few of the many things that it has taught me is a lot of patience, compassion and also how much the work we do really does change lives. #ChangingLives #ClinicalNegligence #disabilityawarenes #siblingsupport #familysupport #BirthInjury

Do Inheritances Have to Be Divided Equally? Inheritances do not have to be split equally among children. While many choose equal division to avoid conflict, other factors like caregiving or lifetime gifts may lead to unequal distributions. If the inheritance is not equal, clear communication about the reasoning behind the decision can prevent misunderstandings and potential disputes. Addressing these matters openly helps ensure a smoother transition and respects family dynamics. Belonging and Family: The Foundation Every Child Deserves For children in care, the sense of belonging is more than an emotional need—it’s essential to their safety, stability, and long-term well-being. When a child doesn’t feel they belong, the consequences can be devastating. They may turn to gangs, become vulnerable to grooming, or find themselves drawn to harmful networks that promise the sense of family they desperately crave. Belonging isn’t just about who a child lives with—it’s about being seen, understood, and supported as their whole self. Attachment and therapeutic care play a key role in helping children address trauma, while culturally sensitive care ensures their identity is acknowledged and respected. When we, as carers and social workers, focus on belonging, we empower children to build healthy relationships, trust others, and see themselves as valued members of a family—whether it’s the one they were born into, a kinship placement, or a foster home. Together, we can create the environments children need to feel safe, loved, and truly at home. #BelongingMatters #FosterCare #KinshipCare #FamilySupport #ChildWelfare
