What are the signs of a successful yoga practice? If your first response to my question is, “I fit in my clothing from three years ago,” then celebrate (if weight loss was a goal for you), let’s rethink our answer. In the modern world, we have turned yoga into a fitness regime and body-oriented practice. Between social media photos of yogis on a cliff looking dangerously thin to the fad about practicing yoga while sipping on wine or allowing animals to tread all over you, we have walked away from the true meaning of yoga. In Yoga Sutra 1.2, Sage Patanjali defines yoga as, “Yogas chitta vritti nirodha.” It means that yoga is the removal of the fluctuations of the mind. These fluctuations that Patanjali refers to have to do with desires, aversions, attachments, ignorance, and the ego’s sense of “I” and “me” and “mine.” In Patanjali’s eight-limbed (Ashtanga) yoga system, the fifth step or limb is called pratyahara and is defined as “the conscious withdrawal of energy from the senses.” If we have goats walking over us or a glass of wine nearby that we sip from between asanas, where is the stillness or withdrawal of senses? If we are focused on how we look in the poses, haven’t we created a deeper relationship with ego? 🪷My essay in elephant journal …in honor of #internationaldayofyoga 🙏🏼🧘🏻♀️ ✍🏼 🔗Link ⬇️ #beyondasanas #yogaistheartofliving #sytar2024 #yogatherapy

The Timeless Journey of Yoga: Where It All Began Yoga is more than just a trend; it's a practice with roots that stretch back thousands of years. Originating in the Indian subcontinent, yoga began as a spiritual and philosophical discipline over 5,000 years ago. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj," which means to unite or join. This idea of unity—between mind, body, and spirit—lies at the heart of yoga. Early forms of yoga were closely connected to the spiritual practices of ancient India. References to yoga can be found in some of the world's oldest texts, like the Rigveda. However, it wasn't just about physical postures; it was about meditation, breath control, and ethical living. The sage Patanjali played a key role in shaping modern yoga by compiling the Yoga Sutras around 400 CE, which outline the eightfold path to achieving a balanced and harmonious life. Today, yoga is practiced worldwide, transcending its spiritual roots to become a holistic approach to health and wellness. Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, improve flexibility, or find inner peace, yoga offers something for everyone. It's fascinating to think that a practice that began so long ago continues to bring people together, helping us all find a bit more balance in our busy lives. #yoga #dekoratus

GStudios India wishes you a healthy and happy International Yoga Day! 🧘♀️✨ Today we are going to talk about Yoga. The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj', which means 'to join' or 'to unite'. According to our Vedic scriptures, the purpose of Yoga is to lead us to the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness, resulting in perfect harmony between mind and body. Reflecting on school days, many of us remember weekly yoga sessions after morning prayers. Remember feeling fresh after the sessions and the day being quite peaceful? As children, we did not understand the connection between yoga and peace, but with time, as the mystery unfolded, our inclination towards daily such practices increased, as did our general curiosity to learn more about it. In today's work culture, where we sit for hours at a time, finding a balance between work and life is difficult yet essential. Many companies promote yoga in their own way, such as by holding meditation sessions or putting a reminder on everyone's computer to take a break and get out of their seats. Yoga is, first and foremost, the process by which we get to know our inner selves. To do this, we need to do more than just asanas (postures). To better understand the history of yoga, we must first acknowledge the efforts of the great sage who codified and systematized the practices, "Maharshi Patanjali." He compiled his knowledge, meaning, and related practices in his Yoga Sutras. His work is still referred to by many yoga teachers today to better understand the journey of being a yogi. It is said that the ultimate goal a person seeks through yoga is 'moksha' (liberation) or 'kaivalya' (freedom). But to achieve this, one has to go through a process. This process starts with the asanas to prepare the body to sustain higher levels of energy; then the process goes to the breath and then to the mind. As we know, yoga was given to the world by India, and we take pride in being ambassadors of yoga. Let’s pledge to invest at least 30 minutes daily to nurture our well-being through yoga. But before we go our ways, let us know what yoga means to you. #internationalyogaday #yogaforwellbeing #yogaeveryday #gsi #gstudiosindia

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking YOGA Yoga-like practices were first mentioned in the ancient Hindu text known as Rigveda. Yoga is referred to in a number of the Upanishads. The first known appearance of the word "yoga" with the same meaning as the modern term is in the Katha Upanishad, which was probably composed between the fifth and third centuries BCE. Yoga continued to develop as a systematic study and practice during the fifth and sixth centuries BCE in ancient India's ascetic and Śramaṇa movements. The most comprehensive text on yoga, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, date to the early centuries of the Common Era; Yoga philosophy became known as one of the six orthodox philosophical schools (Darśanas) of Hinduism in the second half of the first millennium CE. Hatha yoga texts began to emerge between the ninth and 11th centuries, originating in tantra. The term "yoga" in the Western world often denotes a modern form of Hatha yoga and a posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief and relaxation technique, consisting largely of this differs from traditional yoga, which focuses on meditation and release from worldly attachments. It was introduced by gurus from India after the success of Swami Vivekananda's adaptation of yoga without asanas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Vivekananda introduced the Yoga Sutras to the West, and they became prominent after the 20th-century success of hatha yoga.
