A resource well needed in these uncertain times.
The NYA is committed to championing equality, challenging oppression, and fostering safe spaces for communities to come together to celebrate our diversity. Traumatic events such as the one experienced in Southport will deeply impact young people and those who work closely with them. Youth workers play a crucial role in providing immediate and long-term support in helping young people process their experiences and feelings, and to promote respectful dialogue and unity within communities. We’ve pulled together the following guidance alongside the insight of our partners at UK Youth and Youth Focus North West (YFNW) to support those in the sector affected by traumatic events by providing advice and signposting towards resources and other professional services. Please access and share the resources here: https://lnkd.in/eGVVjGiE You may also find our pre-existing Speak it Out toolkit a useful resource to stimulate discussion, thought and reflection around key themes such as identity, belonging, diversity and community with your young people: https://lnkd.in/ePpAbi6y #youthwork #trauma #guidance #youngpeople #community #resources

As we mark Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, it's a moment to reflect deeply on the profound impact and journey of autistic children, especially within the context of Jamaica. Amidst the vibrant tapestry of our nation, autistic individuals contribute their unique perspectives, talents, and gifts, enriching our communities in immeasurable ways. While the prevalence of autism in Jamaica may not be extensively studied or reported, it is essential to recognize the challenges and opportunities these individuals face within our society. In Jamaica, resources and support for autistic individuals may vary, influenced by factors such as access to diagnostic services, cultural attitudes towards disability, and awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Despite these challenges, there is a growing recognition of the importance of fostering acceptance and inclusivity for neurodiverse individuals in Jamaican society. Differently-abled children, including those with autism, serve as beacons of inspiration, teaching us invaluable lessons in empathy, compassion, and unconditional love. Their resilience, creativity, and unwavering spirit shine brightly, illuminating our collective journey toward understanding and embracing neurodiversity. As we celebrate Autism Awareness Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment where autistic individuals in Jamaica are valued, empowered, and allowed to thrive. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #CelebratingDiversity #AutismAwareness #Neurodiversity #InclusionMatters #JamaicaAutismAwareness #Acceptance #LoveWithoutLimits #DifferentNotLess #Empowerment #CommunitySupport #CelebrateDifferences #JamaicanInclusivity #AwarenessDay #UnityInDiversity #TogetherWeThrive #EmbraceNeurodiversity
Tuesday’s #WorldAutismAwarenessDay is an opportunity to celebrate autistic people's invaluable contributions to communities everywhere. But around the world, they continue to confront barriers to their fundamental rights to education, employment and social inclusion. “Today and every day, let’s unite to realize their rights, and ensure an inclusive and accessible world for all," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. https://lnkd.in/e9jCgYv

🤝 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐨! We are excited to announce that 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐤𝐭𝐫𝐚, with the support 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐬 and 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲, is introducing new approaches aimed at empowering the trans community through three impactful activities: ▪️ TRANS 101 – Support group: With the help of Iskra Đurišić, these support groups provide a safe environment to discuss important topics such as laws, health care, and social issues that affect the TIRV community. This initiative aims to foster understanding and provide valuable insights without stigma. ▪️ Individual consultations: Individual consultations offer tailored support to address specific challenges in a confidential and supportive space for those who prefer a more private environment. Your privacy and comfort are our top priorities, and we want you to feel safe sharing your experiences and seeking the help you need. ▪️ Film Nights: These events feature films that explore trans and gender-diverse topics, followed by discussions that encourage networking and sharing of experiences. Together, we are working towards a more inclusive and respectful world. We invite you to engage with these initiatives and contribute to this important cause. 💪🌈 #SMARTBalkans #SMARTsupport #CPCDba #NorwayInBelgrade #CoreGrant #Montenegro Centar za promociju civilnog društva

*An unusually personal post from me* I'm one of the lucky ones, I was formally diagnosed after acting out of frustration while at School. These days, I do well at masking most of the time, not publicly broadcasting my struggles. All of my support disappeared when I left education. I've spent the past decade denying myself the basic needs of someone on the spectrum. Nobody ever explained how I was different, or how to cope, how to navigate the world. There were lots of strategies for getting through education, I just told myself that it was a learning disability, and that the rest of my struggles were me being unproductive; I needed to 'hack' my way through to being 'neuro-typically compliant'. I haven't actively been flaunting my 'abilities' mainly due to fear of discrimination. It doesn't make me less able to do all the things, I might just do them in a different way. My recent transition to being a father of two, husband, dog dad, and homeowner is harder than I ever thought. I've lost myself, I've lost my way, I'm coming out the other side, slowly, very slowly, but also rediscovering myself. Finding new ticks, new strategies, new ways to conquer the world. All while fighting for the support and guidance I thought would be there, but turns out to be a massive gaping hole. If you're still reading, thank you. I ask of you one thing. Be kind. You never know the struggles those around you are going through. The ones who aren't diagnosed, who are still battling to be both understood, and understand the world around them. I'll go clamber down this slippery soap box, and figure out today's level of executive functioning. #worldautismawarenessday #autism #eventtech #accesibility #dei

In my International Relations role, I usually operate backstage, rather than in the limelight. That's why it was so great last week to be able to talk with people in Seacroft for our Council of Europe-funded anti-rumours project. This is such a great project and shows how #Leeds is leveraging in the expertise of our international networks to help bring improvements at a very very local level. #InternationalRelations #AntiRumours #Misinformation
Leeds City Council has been running a fantastic project, funded by Council of Europe's #InterculturalCities programme, looking at how rumours and misunderstandings can drive wedges between communities, and lead to hostility. For our third in-person session, we brought together 17 people from across the Seacroft community, with the help of LS14 TRUST and Chapel FM, to weave all these threads together and talk about how they can be advocates for accuracy and greater understanding within their neighbourhoods. Accessibility is more than removing barriers; it’s about creating an environment where everyone can contribute, lead, and live with dignity🌍 Did you know that 5% of the #entrepreneurs trained through Somo are persons with disabilities? One shining example is Phineas Kasuvi, founder of Iphinkas. She is living proof that disability is not inability. Her incredible impact beautifully reflects this year's theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD): "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." With support from Somo, Phineas transitioned from selling plastic ornaments to creating eco-friendly African earrings. Even more inspiring, she’s providing employment opportunities to other persons with disabilities in her community. Phineas is not just an entrepreneur but a changemaker in her community. 🙌🏿 On this #IDPD, we honor Phineas’s resilience and reaffirm our commitment to supporting more #entrepreneurs like her, ensuring everyone can participate fully and thrive in every facet of life. Read more about her inspiring story and our partnership with Next Step Foundation here: https://lnkd.in/db2C-D2t #SomoCommunity | #EveryoneIncluded
