Over the last several years, we saw that off-mall stores are more efficient, have higher sales per square foot, and are more profitable than in-mall ones,” - Virginia Drosos, Signet CEO Given that standalone locations can offer more space and more control over the store operations compared to mall locations (along with the decline of malls in general) make this seem like Signet is planning on a build towards a business model more similar to independent jewelers. This would really give them more flexibility and opportunity to capitalize on custom jewelry sales, while keeping their vendors happy by having more case space than a mall location could accommodate. Not sure how the lab diamonds as fashion only plan will go; has it really been shown that lab diamonds are creating a new market for fashion jewelry in the lower price points? Especially with gold being so high per ounce, the price of fashion pieces lands more in the labor and metals side of the equation than bridal typically does, so even with the lab prices coming down, the pieces done in gold could still be pretty expensive which could deter potential new customers.
