From a Drunk Text to a ₹750 Crore Empire: The Inspiring Journey of Ashish Hemrajani and BookMyShow In the world of entrepreneurship, inspiration can strike at the most unexpected moments. For Ashish Hemrajani, the co-founder and CEO of BookMyShow, it was a tipsy text message to his boss that set the wheels in motion for what would become a ₹750 crore business. The Genesis of an Idea In 1999, during a backpacking trip in South Africa, Ashish Hemrajani stumbled upon the idea of creating an online ticketing platform. Fueled by the excitement of the moment and perhaps a bit of alcohol, he sent a text message to his boss, sharing his vision. Instead of reprimanding him, his boss encouraged him to pursue his dream. This marked the birth of Bigtree Entertainment, the parent company of BookMyShow. Early Struggles and Persistence The journey was far from smooth. The initial years were marked by numerous challenges, including convincing theaters to come on board and navigating the early days of the internet in India. The dot-com crash of 2002 was a significant setback, reducing the team from 150 to just 6 members and forcing them to operate out of a small apartment in Bandra. Turning Point and Growth Despite these hurdles, Ashish's relentless focus on customer experience began to pay off. By 2007, BookMyShow started gaining traction, and the company shifted its focus from merely selling tickets to enhancing the overall customer experience. This strategic pivot was crucial in differentiating BookMyShow from its competitors and driving its growth. A Global Success Today, BookMyShow operates in five countries, serving over 30 million users. The platform has revolutionized the way people book tickets for movies, concerts, and events, making it a household name in the entertainment industry. The session was enlightening, offering invaluable insights that resonated deeply with my aspirations as an entrepreneur.
