On Halloween, we see a lot of people dressed up in costumes. Naturally, these costumes hide who we are and give off a different (spooky) image. But what if costumes exist all year long? Many of us put on a certain face or image to present a certain way, to prevent a particular perception of us. How exhausting is that? Perhaps there's room to act as our true selves, to share our thoughts and feelings in a more real way, to do things because we want to do them. We may or may not get the response we're seeking. But ask yourself: how will it enhance my life? #halloween #costumes #trueself

Many people love to express creativity, but there’s a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. Cultural appreciation involves respecting and celebrating another culture, often by engaging with it in a way that acknowledges its significance and values. This can include learning about cultural traditions, participating in cultural events respectfully, or even wearing clothing that honors that culture when it’s done thoughtfully. On the other hand, cultural appropriation occurs when someone adopts elements of a culture, particularly those of marginalized groups, in a way that can be seen as disrespectful or superficial. This often happens without understanding the cultural context or significance, which can reinforce stereotypes and contribute to the commodification of that culture. Before picking a costume, it’s crucial to reflect on where it’s coming from and whether it might perpetuate stereotypes or offend. It takes just a moment to consider the impact our choices can have, and we can all contribute to a more respectful and inclusive celebration.
A reminder this weekend before Halloween. This is hands down a beloved time of year for me, but there sure are some super cringy and racist costumes. It takes but a moment to step back and think through a costume. #mycultureisnotacostume

What is the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation? Cultural appropriation often involves the commodification of cultural elements for profit without benefiting the source culture. Appreciation, on the other hand, aims to recognize and give credit to the cultural creators over time and avoiding exploitation and commodification. Be cultural sensible and respectful !
