Join us for Bioethics Breakfast Club: The impact of high-impact research with Joshua LaBaer, Executive Director, Biodesign Institute, and Professor, School of Molecular Sciences and Neal Woodbury, Vice President, Chief Science + Technology Officer and Professor, Knowledge Enterprise. The #ASU Charter calls for "advancing research and discovery of public value." University design aspirations include "Value Entrepreneurship" and "Conduct Use-Inspired Research." The National Science Foundation was created after WWII to support early stage research and yet its newest directorate, Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP), "advances critical and emerging technologies, accelerates use-inspired and translational research..." This emphasis on getting outside the ivory tower surely captures some valuable and transformational aspects of the power of science. But, where does it leave research that doesn't have direct, measurable impacts? What is the viability and place for basic, or fundamental, research in the twenty-first century? Wednesday, March 20, 2024. 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. (MST) Life Science Center C-Wing, LSC 202.

This spring, Washington State University Vancouver celebrated the opening of its state-of-the-art Life Sciences Building, adding another asset to SW Washington's expanding life sciences ecosystem. A testament to the region's potential is Absci, a pioneering generative AI drug creation company. Initially nurtured in nearby Portland, Absci chose Vancouver, WA, for expansion, aided by the Columbia River Economic Development Council (CREDC) and a strategic funding boost from Washington State’s Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund. Now a public entity, Absci illustrates the dynamic growth and innovation happening right here in SW Washington. Home to over 8,000 bioscience professionals and more than 200 entities, SW Washington is rapidly becoming a top market for life sciences. The future is bright and in motion. This is such a great paper in that it looks at the frameworks of a successful research institution that permits a high level of output. The only flaw with the paper is that it limits itself to government-funded centres (universities and institutions). Embracing the 'fail fast' approach, small team dynamic, and technological application output metric is also fundamental to industry success. These key points are what Harrison SPARC Pty Ltd has built into our core values and are driving our success as well. Whether measuring the amount of Nobel laureates or innovative IP generated, these factors are key to all research and development facilities. #research #development #inspireinnovateignite #innovation #technology

Linking classroom theory and industry practice in bioeconomy is more crucial than ever! Earlier this week, our Christina Peters had the fantastic opportunity of presenting the Value Chain Generator® to students at the University of Hohenheim. It was an engaging part of their Value Chain Design module, guided by Ricardo Vargas Carpintero and Valentin, who carry out multicriteria assessment methods of value chains in their bioeconomy department! As highlighted by Professor Iris Lewandowski, head of the Biobased Resources in the Bioeconomy - University of Hohenheim, bioeconomy is all about systems thinking - an integral principle of our VCG.AI We are thrilled to collaborate with our future leaders at the University of Hohenheim as we bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical application. It’s partnerships like these that drive us forward and enable real-world impacts! #bioeconomy #valuechains #circulareconomy #sustainability

🌙 The Creative Side of Science 🌙 Today, I had the pleasure of leading a workshop for OLTECH PhD students at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, inspired by the concept of Night Science from Itai Yanai and Martin Lercher. 🌌 It was a great experience to explore the creative side of the scientific process with such an engaged group of students. I look forward to seeing how they apply these ideas in their future work. #NightScience #CreativityInResearch #PhDStudents #OLTECH #ScientificProcess
