[Update] Excited to share that the recent paper with Rotua Nuraini Tampubolon on "Sustainability in the Supply Chain: Analysing the Efficiency and Effectiveness of the Single Submission of Freight Transport Application through the Indonesia National Single Window System" has been published and is now accessible on the ESCAP website. We analyzed Indonesia's Single Submission of Freight Transport Application (SSm Pengangkut) and found it significantly improves time efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and transparency in port licensing. This innovation aligns with the maritime single window concept and contributes to SDGs 8, 9, and 13. Driving Towards a Sustainable Future: Indonesia's Role in Net-Zero Logistics In recent news from the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting, the logistics sector received a significant boost with the launch of new guidance aimed at achieving net-zero emissions. This initiative, spearheaded by the Smart Freight Centre and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, highlights the critical need for the logistics and transport industry, responsible for over a third of global CO2 emissions, to pivot towards sustainable practices. At the heart of this transformation is the upcoming ISO 14083 standard, which provides a universal method for logistics emissions accounting. This groundbreaking standard is anticipated to be a game-changer for industries worldwide, including those in Indonesia, which plays a pivotal role in global freight transportation. By adopting such standards, Indonesian companies can optimize their logistics operations, enhancing efficiency while significantly reducing their carbon footprint. Given Indonesia's growing economy and its strategic position in global trade routes, embracing these changes is not just about aligning with international standards but also about seizing the opportunity to lead in sustainable logistics within the region. The sector's proactive steps towards decarbonization will be instrumental in supporting the broader goals of climate action and sustainable development. This transition isn't just a necessity; it presents an opportunity for Indonesian businesses to innovate and collaborate on sustainable solutions, offering an impactful contribution to the global move towards a greener future. Let's champion these bold steps locally, ensuring that Indonesia not only meets but exceeds its climate targets. #Sustainability #NetZero #Logistics #Indonesia #ISO14083

Key Takeaway: Sustainability in manufacturing has shifted from an ideal to a critical business strategy due to environmental concerns, consumer expectations, and regulatory pressures. Achieving end-to-end transparency for ethical production remains challenging, particularly in resource consumption and waste generation. Traditional siloed approaches to product lifecycle management hinder accountability and sustainability. Implementing a digital thread, which interlinks product data across the supply chain, can address these challenges. Transitioning to data-node-based systems enhances traceability and transparency, fostering better decision-making. This systematic approach is crucial for meeting future regulations, such as the EU’s Digital Product Passport, ensuring compliance and long-term sustainability. The Port of Singapore (PSA) recently announced plans to expand its Jurong Island Terminal (JIT) to build a more sustainable, efficient and resilient supply chain. JIT, located on Jurong Island’s northwest waterfront, reportedly offers two daily barge sailings, connecting cargo owners on Jurong Island with PSA’s main hubs in Tuas, Pasir Panjang and Brani to access global markets. Jurong Island is the center of Singapore's energy and chemical industry. The island is managed by the Singapore Industrial Estate Corporation (JTC) and has a total area of 3,000 hectares. More than 100 global companies are engaged in refining, olefin production and chemical manufacturing here. While containerized raw materials and finished products can be transported to Jurong Island by truck, barges require less labor and will not cause road congestion. Carbon dioxide emissions will also be reduced by about 30%. In recent years, the demand for barges at Jurong Island Terminal has continued to grow. It is reported that JIT volume increased by 13% year-on-year in 2023, setting a new record of 149,000 TEU. It is reported that after the expansion of JIT, its annual processing capacity will be increased to 300,000 TEU to meet the forecast demand. In addition to this, PSA will create new dangerous goods (DG) handling and cargo transfer facilities to complement its portfolio of physical and digital solutions designed to assist shippers to better manage inventory and supply chains. The JIT expansion project is expected to be completed in 2025. It is reported that according to Singapore's green plan, this expansion will also help Jurong Island transform into a sustainable energy and chemicals park by 2030. On March 8, PSA held a commemorative ceremony at its headquarters, PSA Horizons, with relevant stakeholders and partners attending the event. "The port has always been a gateway and enabler to other pillars of Singapore's economy, providing reliable, resilient and competitive access to global resources and markets," said PSA Southeast Asia regional chief executive Quek Swee Lung. "PSA and JTC's collaboration in expanding the JIT ensures that existing and future companies in Singapore's energy and chemicals industry will continue to benefit and achieve sustainable development for years to come." JTC Assistant Executive President Chen Yongxian said: "As the demand for sustainable logistics continues to grow, Jurong Island's barge traffic will continue to rise. The expansion of JIT is in line with this growth, and the full cooperation with partners such as PSA is a good choice." This is a key step in our journey to establish Jurong Island as a sustainable energy and chemical park." It is reported that in February this year, location data and technology platform HERE Technologies announced that it was helping PSA transform its container truck ecosystem.
