"Be a man," they say!
What does it really mean?
Over the years, the concept of masculinity has evolved. While society's expectations have traditionally revolved around strength, resilience, and success, the narrative is changing. As we approach International Men's Day, we're reminded that 'being a man' now encompasses more. It's about transcending traditional ideals to embrace empathy, equality, and emotional well-being.
A special acknowledgment goes to Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, who started International Men's Day in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999 to honor his father's birthday. Twenty-five years later, the day is celebrated on 19th November in over 80 countries—a testament to the growing importance of reflecting on the role of men in our evolving society. Today is unique to celebrate positive role models who lead with integrity, support others, and value relationships.
This year's theme, Positive Role Models, feels especially relevant. I don't have to look far when I think of role models. I'm fortunate to work alongside men who embody this new definition of masculinity—men who lead by example, mentor others, advocate for inclusivity, and challenge traditional stereotypes. These are men who understand that true fulfillment lies in compassion, openness, and a commitment to building a better future for all.
Here's to all the men who are courageously redefining masculinity, breaking barriers, and supporting one another. Your efforts are not unnoticed, and we thank you 🫡
Happy International Men's Day!
