In the face of countless layoffs and industry gatekeeping, a silver lining appears, and it is the humble indie founder. To help, I have built you this: a comprehensive guide to starting your own studio. ✨ Indie studios are not easy. Only 7% of them survive their first game release. But times of industry strife are hidden opportunities, for it is often during these times that new winners appear, and the balance of power shifts. The statistics can be scary, but it is only by knowing them, learning from them, and proceeding despite them that we have any shot at success. At shifting this industry to one with less volatility, and more kindness. So here, in my own small way, is a guide to help you do just that. You, my indie dev family, are the revolutionaries of our age. You are the ones that will lead us to a better tomorrow. I'm just here to guide you, and perhaps cast a spell or two in your favor. 💜 ➡ Get the full guide in high quality with clickable links here: https://lnkd.in/eyftv42S What are we missing? Great! This guide covers a wide range of scenarios.
Lots of good thoughts here, Willem. If you do all these things and execute well you should succeed… but there are some other routes that can work. Whatever you do just know like any business startup it does require a lot of work. One thing I would highlight throughout this entire process is: make something that is fun to play early in your journey. I see a lot of people/studios fall off the wagon somewhere on this chart. Having a game prototype early on that is legitimately fun can help keep morale and momentum up through the more painful parts.
Please do cast a spell or two, because I am experiencing hardship entering this industry and i have decided to make my own studio :) so any kind of spell is welcomed :)
I'd add in after getting a publisher to set up contingencies for if the situation changes - seen quite a few companies scrambling after sure things suddenly became not so sure. Otherwise a good overview of the process, showing there's way more to it than picking an idea you think is cool and going at it until release, if you want success anyway!
Very good! I talk about this with my students and when possible try to facilitate partnerships. One of my 16 yo students didn’t know he created a company until I told him he had basically built out the infrastructure for a game studio, he was just making games for fun. He just graduated college, still running the company with several employees. Starting young when the stakes are lower can be a great advantage so I try to get my students to think Indy from the start.
This is an amazing graph of actionable stuff, thanks for sharing
We are on the purple train 😎
This is such a great thing to have! I'm currently starting the process of founding my own game studio as well.
