Poor communication causes problems, delays, and failures in teams and organizations. As engineers who want to communicate what we are working on and why it matters, we need to work on getting better at it. In this IEEE Spectrum / TEMS article, “Tips for Improving Workplace Communication Skills: Primer for Talking to Leaders, Clients, and Teams,” author Jeff Perry discusses how individuals at all levels have varying preferences for style, cadence, length, and mode. Communicating “up” to leaders requires a different approach vs communicating across all levels vs communicating with those you lead. Here’s what you need to know. https://lnkd.in/evTq2qQN IEEE TEMS: Technology and Engineering Management Society #communication #leadership #engineering

📝 Just read an insightful article on communication across different levels within an organization by Jeff Perry, part of IEEE’s career advice series. It really highlighted how critical effective communication is for engineers, whether you're speaking with leaders, peers, or your team. What stood out to me: Communicating with senior leaders: Keep it concise and focus on the impact and big picture. Collaborating with peers: It's about the exchange of ideas, solving problems together, and being mindful of different perspectives. Leading teams: Provide context and transparency to keep everyone engaged and motivated. This article was a great reminder that communication isn’t one-size-fits-all. We need to adapt based on whom we’re interacting with to ensure clarity and alignment. Highly recommend this read to anyone looking to improve their communication skills in a technical role! #Leadership #Communication #Engineering #CareerDevelopment

Active listening takes resilience while being grounded in your own beliefs and values. When someone asks you “how do you handle criticism?”, what are they looking? If I am asked the question, my typical response is “I handle it well, constructive or not”. But … honestly, I don’t handle criticism well. Does anyone? How do you handle criticism? Move forward with action or defensively retreat? I’m changing the way I listen and the way I communicate. Home and work. It’s a work in progress, but I am seeing the benefits. I want to do this for my own personal reasons. Applying this to work: Leaders listen and communicate well. Leaders want to understand. Leaders act. Leaders don’t retreat. Leaders don’t get defensive. Leaders are not passive or reactionary. Do you actively listen? #leadership #architecture #design #inmyelement #mentalhealth #leaders #construction #architect #revit #specifications

ALP recommends this approach to education leaders thinking at a systems level and recognizing the transformative change technology brings. 1. Plan Use data and frameworks developed by experts to generate common language documents, develop playbooks for leaders, and prioritize resources in the short and long term. 2. Act Prioritize cross-functional collaboration so that implementation from guidance documents is consistent and derived from diverse perspectives. ⛔Resist large technology purchases before the human knowledge, skills, and collaboration are in place. 3. Refine Have a system to capture data and build larger networking systems beyond the internal collaboration. Transformation requires collective action, collective learning, and scalable collaboration. ❓Where is your organization in addressing the technology transformation? #ArtificialIntelligence #Leadership #Innovation
