our book Plural and Multiple Geographies of Modern and Contemporary Art in East-Central Europe, Edited By Caterina Preda, Magdalena Radomska is announced on the Routledge website. The book will come out on November 11, 2024. You can check out the table of contents. This edited volume proposes a theoretical reflection on the different artistic geographies of East-Central Europe (ECE) from an interdisciplinary perspective found at the intersection of art history, art and politics, and critical geography. Contributors argue that this multiplicity is a defining feature of the region. At the same time, chapters employ the concept of “plural geographies” and call for an equal geography, based on solidarity and an equal distribution of capital, which could allow plural geographies to exist and be described. The “multiple geographies” of ECE consider the perspective of local conditions and emphasize how this region was part of successive empires with an important ethnic diversity and changing borders, giving it historical layers and multicultural characteristics. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, political studies, cultural studies, and geography. https://lnkd.in/dztw-qzK

This week, the Congress for Art History is taking place in Erlangen with the topic BildRAUM (ImageSPACE). Pleasingly, the organizers refer directly to my art and media archaeological research on immersion in virtual image space, which I conducted 30 years ago. I was able to present it for the first time at congresses in Jena (1999) & CIHA/London (2000). At that time, in the mid-90s, it was impossible to get a PhD scholarship with this subject matter in conservative art history, it was said: "This is not art." Since then, "Virtual Art" has been published in many countries and has apparently even become the most cited monograph in the field today (GoogleScholar 2800+). I'm looking forward to new insights! #Erlangen #bildwissenschaft #kongress #kunstgeschichte #interaktion #panorama #OliverGrau #kunstgeschichte_kongress #bildraum #immersion #mediaarchaeology #mediaarthistories

There are tasks that are accompanied by actual photo images in Melanated Mathematics to share and promote historical awareness. For example, this one I took while visiting the Vatican museum in Rome. 👀 (from the Grades 2-3 Student Workbook) https://melanatedmath.com #education #history #melanatedmathematics

Christie's is delighted to announce the second year of the Christie’s Grant for Nazi-era Provenance Research, supporting the next generation of provenance researchers in this field. The grant will be offered to four recipients (£5,000 each), to fund forward-thinking academic, post-graduate research into subjects related to Nazi-era provenance research and restitution. In addition, and new in 2024, Christie’s will also offer five grants of £1,000 each to undergraduates who are studying Nazi-era and restitution-related topics, and who may be considering a future career or study in this area, with a view to deepening their interest in the subject. Sarah Done, Senior Director, Restitution commented: “The confiscations, forced sales and looting of artworks during the Nazi-era was an unprecedented theft. Research into personal and cultural loss has grown exponentially over the last 25 years. Without the dedication and tenacity of researchers, it would be almost impossible to uncover and record this history, and to advance restitution efforts. But there is much more to do. That is why, for the second consecutive year, Christie’s is delighted to support the next generation of Nazi-era provenance researchers. The exchange of ideas and engagement with last year’s grant applicants was a rewarding part of our ‘Reflecting on Restitution’ programme, honouring the 25th anniversary of the Washington Principles. We look forward to increasing our support this year.” https://lnkd.in/eavnbBK9 #Christies #restitution #provenanceresearch #arthistory #grants

Catalogue Co-Ordinator role 📖 I had the opportunity to compose, collect and edit the main body of text for this year’s History of Art and Museum Studies Symposium, titled Humanity: The Response. Jamie Newall did such an amazing job on the layout and colour schemes, and Issy’s cover reflects the vast array of topics appearing throughout the symposium, reflecting the collaborative nature of the event. During the design phases of Humanity: The Response, the emerging themes of resistance, mortality and connection held a defining grasp over the symposium. The research papers being presented will reflect the collective resilience of humanity’s stories in reaction to both anticipated times and unprecedented events, as told through diverse and personal curiosity which drives the research. This research is then, in turn, interwoven with knowledge gained through the students' time earning their degrees, to result in a comprehensive and analytical examination of the artistic products of humanity. The state of being human is arguably the most prevalent and overarching topic covered within art history, and therefore can be applied to this symposium through exploring the different avenues of our past existence and informing potential directions going forward. #symposium #historyofart #historyofartandmuseumstudies. #mortalunderstanding

This thesis below, that I had a privilege to supervise, is a proof that some art history departments, like the one at Utrecht University, are more open to curatorial research than others. Watching students progress from traditional art history methods to interdisciplinary approaches is fascinating. It shows how the field is evolving and how students are gaining broader, more versatile skills that will enable them to become the leaders of tomorrow. In the wake of current geopolitics, do you view the West as former, collective, or fragmented?
