ICMA - International City/County Management Association’s Post

While national news media will be focusing on which party controls the House, the Senate, and the White House, let’s not forget the importance of our local elections – many of which are non-partisan. The local offices and referenda on the ballots throughout the country will have the most direct impact on the everyday lives of the American people. We are tracking referenda that could change the form of government in several local governments where ICMA has informed local communities about the benefits of council-manager governance and the role of city/county managers and administrators. Most notably, we are keeping an eye on – County of Los AngelesCity of Lawrence, KS, City of Mattoon, IL; City of Covington, Kentucky, and Village of Glencoe. What local issues are you tracking this election day?

Mattoon, IL adopted council-manager form of government (56% voting in favor of changing from commission form of government) Lawrence, KS rejected change to form of government that would have had an elected mayor with greater direct influence on administration of government. Village of Glencoe, IL approved adopting home rule status Covington, KY voted 60% to 40% to change from council-manager to mayor-council form of government. County of Los Angeles measure to eliminate appointed county manager in favor of an elected county executive is currently leading by less than 0.5% Final count won't be known for up to a week when all ballots are required to arrive. Overall, our advocacy efforts saw three wins, one loss, and one still too close to call. It was a pleasure working with our Illinois City/County Management Association (ILCMA) on the Mattoon and Glencoe initiatives and Kentucky City/County Management Association on the Covington initiative. Great groups of professionals dedicated to the profession!

Two Clients had tax measures; Cathedral City CA (73% supported) and San Clemente (64% supported).

Trust for Public Land worked on 23 ballot measures for parks, conservation, trails and school yards. Nationwide 22 of the 23 appear to have passed. All of the ones I worked on in the Southeast were approved by voters, and five of the six were in Republican-voting counties. Interested to learn more? Send me a message.
