Amidst the discord today, let's work together to heal our communities. In November 2005, during my theological studies, I set out to visit Auschwitz Birkenau in Oscwiecim, Poland. There, as I stood in that bitter bone-chilling winter cold among the dark gray ruins of evil's construct, I learned unforgettable lessons that have since been imprinted in my heart. 1. If we are not vigilant and do not guard our hearts and minds, we are all capable of commiting/permitting acts of unspeakable evil and atrocities. No one is immune. 2. In war and conflict, there are no victors; only victims. And ALL of humanity, unavoidably and unmistakably, will sustain a profound and lasting loss. 3. Those who forget/neglect the lessons of history are certain to repeat its mistakes. But the greatest of those lessons is that from the survivors and those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. And that is a lesson of hope - that it only takes a few lit candles to light up a dark room. A few voices for the voiceless to change the course of history. And a few who will not turn a blind eye to bring about justice and peace. It is seldom enough to just pray for peace in war-torn lands. We must do the hard work within to cultivate peace, understanding, forgiveness and mercy in our hearts and minds first. Let us be the light that keeps the darkness at bay. Let us not give safe harbor to hatred and divisiveness. Let us stand with all humanity. And let us work together to heal our communities.
