Today I participated in a wonderful event organized by Digital Health Copenhagen - Meetup.com in collaboration withHealth Tech Hub Copenhagen Esteemed panelists, industry trends and predictions, startup pitches, networking with experts, founders and VC representatives. My insights on opportunities and challenges for AI in Healthcare in the near future: + AI and digital biomarkers - huge volumes of data and robust algorithms are allowing for discovery of new biomarkers, enabling deeper insights into various diseases. But also advance of the technology enables non-invasive diagnostics. + Healthcare digitalization - unanimously common view of the audience has been that reducing healthcare administration is a perfect low risk-high return use case for GenAI, addressing specific operational inefficiencies. One of the startups Saichologist was actually pitching the application of LLM augmented ERP for psychology practitioners. + Private actors are much easier to innovate with, as they are more sharply focused on ner-term cost saving. But even regions are catching up, with healthcare being the largest segment of public spending by a large margin. - Trustworthy AI and validation will stay a major hurdle. Application for "high risk-high return" areas is thus going to be muted until mechanistic interpretability (or other methods?) have matured. ? The USA is expected to double down on innovation with Elon Musk and JFK Jr at the helm, setting the trend for coming years. ? EU MDR and EU AI ACT are adding layers of complexity, especially for startups in the field. Risk aversion of EU may lead to further stagnation. Thanks Katalin Vikuk Mads-Jakob Vad Kristensen Manuel Montoya Catalá Constant Beroulle Isaac Tarek and others for the insightful conversations! And special kudos to Satyam Goel and Paula Petcu for organizing! #digitalhealthtech #copenhagen

In health innovation, evidence is key but commercials are often the kingmaker. A pleasure to present on research commercialisation at a Panacea Innovation and British Heart Foundation programme in Worcester College, Oxford last week. Thanks to Ross Thomson and Mina Elisha Bekheet for the invitation. Reflections from the day: 🎓 Even 5 years ago, talking commercialisation with clinicians and academics would be a "Why" conversation. Now it jumps straight to the "How" and "What" - even at the ideation stage. IMO this is a promising sign for clinically led innovation. 💰 Grant funders are getting much, much better at appraising commercial credibility. Investors are also getting much, much better at knowing what "good" evidence actually looks like. Bridging that gap is where innovative clinicians can play a huge role in Health Tech - especially as the baseline starts to rise. 📈 There's more and more case studies of promising technologies that stumble at the commercial hurdle. Potentially we're starting to see industry playbooks e.g. digital therapeutics having a clearer path to success than even 2 years ago. That's particularly exciting for Digital Health technologies. 🌐 I still find it interesting that whilst there's an increasing recognition of needing to understand each target market's nuance, we still tend to bunch markets together into supranational blocks. ☀️ The "Other Place" doesn't look half bad in summer..

Advances in healthcare are one of the greatest advantages of the times we live in and it's only getting more exciting (and profitable). Despite the geopolitical ructions going on around the world, there has hardly been a better time in human history to be alive - particularly as it concerns our physical health. The COVID-19 pandemic was a case in point of the extraordinary advances in medical technology. In hindsight, it’s quite mind-blowing how companies like Pfizer were so quickly able to harness existing and frontier therapies to map COVID-19 and produce a vaccine. And AI is set to be another game-changer. We’ve never had better opportunities to manage and treat our health concerns, and what makes it all more exciting is that the future of personalised treatments is already upon us.
The golden age of biotech is coming! Are you ready?

At the HLTH Conference 2024 in Amsterdam, Google’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, highlighted AI's transformative potential in healthcare, likening its impact to the discovery of penicillin. Dr. DeSalvo discussed how AI can address significant challenges such as burnout, cognitive burden, chronic diseases, and healthcare costs, emphasising its role in enhancing care, filling capability gaps, and scaling positive health outcomes globally. Google's initiatives, like the Med-Gemini LLM and AlphaFold, were cited as examples of AI advancing diagnostics and drug discovery. For MediRecords, these insights highlight the importance of integrating AI to improve patient care. By adopting AI technologies either directly or with partners, MediRecords can enhance the platform with advanced diagnostic tools, predictive analytics, and personalised treatment plans. AI integrations can help reduce clinician burnout, streamline workflows, and enhance health outcomes, aligning with the broader goal of democratising healthcare and improving health equity. As a leading cloud-based electronic health record provider, MediRecords is ready to bring AI and other enterprise solutions to Australian and overseas markets.

The creation of this shared data space for research represents a significant advancement in the use of digital twins and artificial intelligence applications in the healthcare sector. However, it is crucial that this progress goes hand in hand with the security and privacy protection of individuals' health data. We are committed to working tirelessly to ensure that this project serves as an example of excellence in data security and as a catalyst for the continuous improvement of social and healthcare services. #DigitalTwins #AIinHealthcare #DataSecurity #HealthDataPrivacy #HealthcareInnovation #ResearchAdvancements #SocialCare #ContinuousImprovement
We are delighted to announce our participation in an upcoming project to create a shared social and health data space for continuous care, emergencies, and research. We are partnering with Accuro Technology S.l., a leader in applying technology and innovation for the benefit of society. We are also joined in this project by Cluster-SIVI SIVI, an exemplary organization dedicated to translating research into clinical practice to improve people's health. The Fundación Unid will be collaborating on this project as well, bringing their expertise and excellence in health, technology, and research collaborations to the table. Soon, this project will make it possible to eliminate gaps in social and healthcare continuity across different territories, both public and private. This shared data space for research will be a significant leap forward in the use of digital twins and other AI applications in healthcare. Stay tuned for more updates!
