Yesterday at the Blue Earth Summit we first met in our Red Bull Days, Britta in F1 with various drivers and me at Red Bull Formula Una projects with F1 We’ve seen a move of drivers taking the difficult, often very criticised, challenges by facing systems change. Nico Rosberg has become a big voice. I first met Sebastian Vettel as a young driver many years ago and along with many drivers were Uber focused on their sports. What I want to share is that, like any major sports player, this does not mean that they do not care about their impact from the sports they are professionals in. Please allow them their voice and their huge platforms to add to the global need for systems change. I’ve watched very young athletes come through sports, they are not told, or taught, the impact they have. They are laser focused and supported in their sport. Please allow these young athletes, as they grow and understand the world the permission to learn, grow, change and adapt in what ever way they choose. It’s super cool to see Britta in this space of impact and so fabulous to spend time with you again at the summit. With initiatives like Buzzin Corner and Race with a Trace that Seb is championing, I’m looking forward to seeing the next projects and collaborations that may come. A short history of Formula Student (Part 1): The Society of Automotive Engineers was founded in 1981, in the United States. The program later became known as Formula SAE. By 1998, seven teams were competing across the UK and US, and annual events were held at the MIRA Proving Ground, Warwickshire. The University of Birmingham went on to claim the top spot amongst UK teams. The IMechE Formula Student undertook management of the European venture, while remaining in partnership with the SAE. By 1999, Formula Student events were held in Birmingham, at the National Exhibition Centre. The Rochester Institute of Technology won overall, and the University of Leeds took top place for the UK. At the turn of the millennia, the US remained on top, taking yet another win. However, their victories would not last long (see next week's post for Part 2, and the podium emergence of Oxford Brookes Racing). In 2001, Georgia Tech took the overall win in Birmingham, with Leeds scoring highest for the UK teams. In 2002, the event relocated to Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire. Georgia took pole position again, with Brunel University of London placing top for the UK. The Driver Training Event was also established, taking place in Wigan. The event was available to all teams participating in FS, who had built their own cars in preparation for the main event in July. Want to learn more about Formula Student? 🏎️🔥 Exciting times ahead as we gear up for a week of intense competition and rivalry in F1 in Schools! 🏁 Between March 11th and 15th, we will witness not one but TWO National Finals taking place simultaneously at opposite ends of the globe—in the UK and Australia. The UK National Finals will be held in Rotherham, just outside Sheffield, where the weather is expected to be a cool 12°C. Meanwhile, down under in Adelaide, South Australia, competitors will face the heat in more ways than one, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 41°C! 🔥 This stark contrast highlights the diverse conditions in which these young engineers and entrepreneurs compete and symbolizes the intensity and the fierce rivalry that defines the F1 in Schools competition. The rivalry between the UK and Australia at the F1 in Schools World Finals has always been keenly contested. With both nations holding their National Finals in the same week, we can only anticipate the competition and determination to be even more electrifying. The heat is on as every team pushes their limits to design, construct, and race their miniature F1 cars at breakneck speeds. Let's cheer for these young innovators representing the future of engineering, technology, and motorsports.
