A short history of Formula Student (Part 1): The Society of Automotive Engineers was founded in 1981, in the United States. The program later became known as Formula SAE. By 1998, seven teams were competing across the UK and US, and annual events were held at the MIRA Proving Ground, Warwickshire. The University of Birmingham went on to claim the top spot amongst UK teams. The IMechE Formula Student undertook management of the European venture, while remaining in partnership with the SAE. By 1999, Formula Student events were held in Birmingham, at the National Exhibition Centre. The Rochester Institute of Technology won overall, and the University of Leeds took top place for the UK. At the turn of the millennia, the US remained on top, taking yet another win. However, their victories would not last long (see next week's post for Part 2, and the podium emergence of Oxford Brookes Racing). In 2001, Georgia Tech took the overall win in Birmingham, with Leeds scoring highest for the UK teams. In 2002, the event relocated to Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire. Georgia took pole position again, with Brunel University of London placing top for the UK. The Driver Training Event was also established, taking place in Wigan. The event was available to all teams participating in FS, who had built their own cars in preparation for the main event in July. Want to learn more about Formula Student? Stay tuned for next week's update, which will cover 2003-2008. #industryinsights #motorsport #fsuk #feedback #datadriven #teamupdates #socialmedia #oxfordbrookesracing #silverstone #imeche

I think it's fair to say that the UK is the de facto lead in motorsport engineering and we need to support that position so that we have a sustainable future for motorsport. There are two streams in engineering - 1. Academic - students wanting to do design, development and research, 2. Vocational/Practical - the 'Hands On' side, the mechanics and engineers who set the cars up, prepare the cars, rebuild them after accidents - the team members you see outside the garages doing the pitstops in F1. There is a serious shortage of suitable engineers, but particularly on the practical side. We have been advised that in July 2025 funding for the two mainstream 'motorsport' vocational qualifications is being withdrawn. We have heard that this is due to them not being able to demonstrate sufficient take up of careers in the motorsport sector. The reason for that is that they are not delivering the correct skills. SCU Motorsport undertook 10 months of research in 2019, supported by Ufi VocTech Trust, talking to race team managers and mechanics in WEC, ELMS, British GT, F4 and many other series to validate our approach. We also spoke to race car manufacturers and the supply chain and the unanimous feedback is that they would not take on students that had just completed either of the two mainstream qualifications. Why wasn't any analysis undertaken before making a decision to withdraw funding? Surely it would make more sense to understand the problem and address it - that is what SCU Motorsport have done and we constantly get feedback on our programme "that is what is needed". We are writing a qualification based on the feedback from the motorsport sector. We are in discussions with an awarding body for them to become our accreditation body. This is a sector that delivers £10 Billion to the UK Economy - struggling to get engineers with the right experience and skills, students who want to enter the motorsport sector and the funding to support this is being withdrawn. We will continue to develop our qualification based on the overseas interest we have. #fia #motorsporteducation Photo credit to GOV UK.

Really excited to be offering this fully funded PhD! Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport, in collaboration with More than Equal, are aiming to investigate the physical, anthropometric, psychological and cognitive characteristics of racing drivers across the pathway. A brilliant partnership to better understand what it takes to go from karting to F1, the profile drivers possess, and the characteristics that are key to perform at the highest level. This should be a really exciting PhD, utilising the great resources and equipment at the MMU Institute of sport, with huge novelty and impact, shaping the training and development of future F1 champions. https://lnkd.in/etqKmnUr

If you are a fan of Formula 1, Formula E and all forms of Motorsport UK, you'll know that it is a difficult industry to get into, demanding a lot of time and money spent at the grass roots level to get started - and then a combination of talent, opportunity and luck to progress to its higher tiers - which is why a lot of kids don't see themselves represented on the racetrack, in the garages or on the pit wall. Thanks to Sir Lewis Hamilton for his dedication and persistence in campaigning for better equality and representation in the industry, and setting up Mission 44 to provide the opportunities for under-represented communities to pursue an engineering career in motorsport. This initiative, with the Royal Academy of Engineering, provides a scholarship that will pay for all tuition fees and maintenance costs, dedicated motorsport training and networking events and access to the Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme - which could be the critical lifeline that aspiring young talent from black and mixed black ethnic communities need to overcome the barriers to entry for this industry. And as we look forward to more sustainable approaches to the sport, we need diverse talent to bring the innovation and passion that's needed to make lasting changes for the better. There's only just over a week to go before the deadline, so if you know someone who wants to translate their passion for motorsport into a career, encourage them to apply. #motorsportforall #mission44 #lh44 #equalityinmotorsport #equalityinengineering #inclusiveeducation
One week left to apply - applications close 13 March. The #MScMotorsport Scholarship Programme was created with the support of Mission 44 to provide funding and support to students from Black and mixed Black backgrounds to pursue a master's degree in motorsport. Do you know someone who could benefit? Share this opportunity with them. For more information and to start an application, visit: https://lnkd.in/eGygmzur
