I'm delighted to announce that my latest review paper, titled "Design of nanostructured 2D (photo-)electrocatalysts for biomass valorization coupled with H2 production", has been published in the journal Sustainable Energy & Fuels. Summary: This paper explores innovative design strategies for two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based (photo-)electrocatalysts to enhance the efficiency of hydrogen production through electrocatalytic water splitting, as well as their wide application in hybrid water electrolysis. Moreover, the current challenges and emerging strategies for the development of advanced (photo-)electrocatalysts and industrial-scale systems are emphasized. I am pleased to share our new publication in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (an original research article, titled "Synergistic effect of blended amines on carbon dioxide absorption: Thermodynamic modeling and analysis of regeneration energy". This study evaluates the performance of commercial amines, including monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), diisopropanolamine (DIPA), N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), triethanolamine (TEA), and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), along with their binary mixtures, with a focus on their synergistic effect in reducing the regeneration energy. This research has been a long time in the making-very first of it's kind-, and I’m happy to finally share it with you all: "Hydrogen bubble transport of a direct toluene electro-hydrogenation electrolyzer visualized by synchrotron X-ray CT" https://lnkd.in/grgHA4Fu In this research, we explored how synchrotron X-ray CT can help us better understand and improve hydrogen bubble transport in direct toluene electro-hydrogenation electrolyzers. Publishing this work was a significant personal milestone. When I first began experiments at SPring-8, I knew I wanted to contribute to the scientific community using this incredible technology. I am really thankful to the researchers that worked hands-on during the experimental stage: Antonio Atienza-Márquez , TAKUTO ARAKI , K. Shigemasa, Jang S., K. Nagasawa and R. Shiono. Also SPring-8 collaborators: Keiji Umetani, Albert Mufundirwa, Masato Hoshino, and Kentaro Uesugi for their support in obtaining the SPring-8 data that made this research possible. This work reflects the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable energy solutions forward. Last week in Shanghai, I had the pleasure of joining the 3rd International Symposium on Ammonia Energy as an invited lecturer, presenting: 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 ⚛️ During my talk, I shared insights into the giant steps forward the kinetics community has made over the past decade in achieving a fundamental understanding of ammonia combustion. I also discussed some of the short-term challenges lying ahead to further advance our theoretical understanding of ammonia chemistry. ⚡️ As e-fuels are increasingly recognized as the keystone to connecting renewable energy with a large-scale utilization, the massive participation in the symposium restated the vital role of the science and technology behind ammonia energy in the ongoing energy transition. This morning, Lawien Zubeir from our project partner TNO participated in the panel session "A Future Based on RES" at the EU Projects Zone Hub during the final day of Enlit Europe. Lawien, alongside experts from innovative projects such as SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT, 3Bee, ThumbsUp, HYSTORE PROJECT EU, and HE Reformer, provided key insights into the latest advancements in the TAKE-OFF project, focusing on renewable energy integration and the transformative role of synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) in building a sustainable future for aviation. During the session, Lawien highlighted our project’s progress, sharing exciting results ahead of our final conference on 11th December. Notably, TAKE-OFF’s breakthrough in catalyst development is enabling the direct conversion of CO₂ and H2 into light olefins—an advancement that skips the traditional intermediate methanol synthesis step resulting in CAPEX and energy savings. Key Achievements Discussed: 🔵 Successful synthesis of light olefins directly from CO₂ and H₂, with ~90% selectivity and efficient CO recycling. 🔵 Advances in oligomerisation to jet fuel, achieving high selectivity (>80%) in liquid-range oligomers and over 90% conversion rates using nickel catalysts. 🔵 The TNO-patented SIENNA reactor with in-situ water separation, showing a 40% increase in methanol productivity. These developments not only highlight TAKE-OFF’s potential to contribute to the advancement of synthetic fuel production, but also showcase the significant role of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) in advancing sustainable energy solutions. #RenewableEnergy #SustainableAviation #SyntheticFuels #EnergyInnovation

⭐ Esa Kurkela, VTT, represented FlexSNG at IConBM2024, International Conference on BIOMASS, held in Palermo, Italy on 19-22 May 2024. Esa presented the ‘Development of flexible fluidized-bed gasification process for co-production of synthesis gas and biochar’ as an oral presentation.
