Last weekend, I attended an AI for Ukraine Recovery hackathon to work on a damage evaluation challenge and improve my skills as a Computer Vision engineer. It turned out the hackathon wasn't about solving technical issues but analyzing the domain and proposing a startup idea that could change this field.
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of this type of hackathon. Nevertheless, I'm happy I was there, and I believe I owe some 'thank you's to people who made me feel this way 😄
First of all, Grete Gutmann, Civitta and Challenger Accelerator — thanks for organizing the challenge and making it happen.
Olha H., Joosep Viik, Matteo R. & Thomas Gomez — thanks for being an amazing team with a great vibe and no fear of pivoting from the initial proposal. In particular:
- Olha H. — thanks for team building, time management, keeping us focused, and asking tough questions,
-Joosep Viik — thanks for rich civil architecture knowledge and "ideas management" (i.e. stopping discussions from time to time to take a view from the top),
- Matteo R. & Thomas Gomez — thanks for your independence, technological expertise, and fast prototype checking.
Additionally, I would like to say thank you to all mentors and specifically to:
- Joseph Early — for the great lecture "How to use AI Fast" and extensive private Q&A session later,
- Rain Sepp — for being truly engaged in our team discussions during the mentor sessions,
- Peeter P. Mõtsküla — for the legal consultations at the beginning.
Finally, thanks to all those who came to the hackathon to dedicate their time and try to solve problems Ukraine is struggling with. It was great to spend the weekend surrounded by people, who care about similar causes.
P.S.
Btw, happy to share that our team won first place among the 8 other teams competing in Tallinn, so maybe you will hear more about the project in future 🙂
