This post is not about Football! But... Have you ever heard of FC Zwolle or NAC Breda? No? Me neither! How about Cambuur or AZ Alkmaar? These four football teams have something in common: Arne Slot. For those who haven't heard of Slot, he could be described as an average football player who spent much of his career with smaller clubs. When he transitioned to coaching, he didn't start with household names or juggernaut teams. Yet today, he's the manager of Liverpool, a team competing at the very highest levels - topping the Premier League and Champions League tables. How does someone who hasn't played or managed the giants of football achieve such remarkable success? The answer lies in skills, attributes, insights and qualities that transcend personal playing history. His job isn't to be the best player, but to get the best out of his players. Tactical acumen, a deep understanding of the realities of the game and the ability to inspire others to fulfill their potential. This brings us to the broader question: Do you have to have scaled a multi-million-pound business to coach one? The answer is the same. Coaching isn't about having lived someone else's specific experience. It's about understanding the principles of success, asking the right question, and guiding others to see possibilities and solutions that they might miss on their own. A great coach knows how to inspire confidence, cultivate strengths, and challenge people to grow. Business, like football, is about strategy, mindset, and team dynamics. The best coaches bring perspective, clarity, and accountability to the table, whether they've walked your exact path or not... As a final point of clarity, and before anyone asks, no, I'm not a Liverpool fan! If I had my way, this post would have been about the mighty Arsenal or the legendary Arsene Wenger. But as I mentioned earlier, this post isn't about football - it's about leadership, growth, and how success can be supported by those who have never walked the path you intend to follow 🤐 . When we think about the Olympics, we usually think about the stars not the coaches however the stars know they have talent bit without their coaching team they wouldn't be there; John Wooden was such a coach. Nicknamed "the Wizard of Westwood", Wooden won ten National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in a 12-year period as head coach for the UCLA Bruins, including a record seven in a row. No other team has won more than four in a row in Division I college men's or women's basketball. So as #businessleaders we should ask ourselves, why do the best have a great coach and then 'who is our coach?'. It is my belief that every business should train their teams to accept and be coaches as part of being a successful team. Wooden was also a mentor to other coaches, as leaders we should also perform that role in our organisation and set ourselves to achieve excellence in this field. Today's #salesleader is a coach. Tomorrow's sales leaders will also be coaches. The world of sales is evolving rapidly with lots of data on every aspect of our performance. As Wooden says today, we need to know we have hit peak capability, we are the very best that we can be, as individuals and as a team (two different dynamics). So today, list everything we need to embed a successful coaching programme in our own organisation and then look at how we ensure we have in place a coach and mentor for ourselves in this endeavour. Nick Saban is (IMHO) the greatest college football coach of all time, with 7 National Championships (6 at Alabama & 1 at LSU). Saban is legendary as a transformational leader, changing the culture and potential of every team he’s coached… though even he couldn’t do anything with the Miami Dolphins! At the heart of Saban’s approach is “process thinking.” He describes it as the importance of focusing on preparation and execution rather than the end result; success is a journey, not a destination. As part of this “process thinking,” Saban had a coach analyze hundreds of hours of game footage, focusing on the average length of a play: 7 seconds. From that point on, a foundational piece of Saban’s coaching was to focus on winning those 7 seconds, ensuring each player understood the value of complete focus and execution for that brief moment… 7 seconds. Once those 7 seconds are done, you get a break and start again—stacking these moments into excellence. The average football game lasts nearly 3.5 hours. Saban wasn’t asking his team to be perfect for all that time; he was asking them to commit 100% for 7 seconds. Anyone can focus entirely for 7 seconds. Brilliant, right? Too often, we get caught up in chasing the end result and lose sight of the small steps that get us there. Recently, when I have found myself multitasking during a call or cutting corners on a task I just want to finish (we all do it), I pause and ask, “Can I be excellent for just 7 seconds?”   It’s working. How does it feel to meet the guru in your field? Now I know 💙 Over the past few weeks, I had the pleasure of attending live webinars hosted by one of the world’s top coaches and among the first 25 Master Certified Coaches — Marcia Reynolds, PsyD, MCC. As my tennis-enthusiast husband put it, «Wow! It’s like meeting Roger Federer!» 💡𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝟱 𝗜’𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂: 1. Coaching isn’t about helping people 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 better; it’s about guiding them to 𝘴𝘦𝘦 better. 2. We should listen to what people 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯’𝘵 saying. Hearing beyond the words reveals doubts, values, beliefs, and fears. It’s not always easy, but it’s fascinating to watch as clients’ thoughts unfold. 3. Staying fully #present for a client is a true art. Calming inner thoughts takes practice. Marcia shared a tip I’ve integrated: grounding by touching the floor with both feet to feel supported. This simple act can turn on presence and curiosity. 4. Keep a #beginnersmind in everything you do. Seeing the world through fresh eyes allows you to see more and find joy in the details. 5. There are leaders for themselves and leaders for their team. To understand what kind of leader you are, ask: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙? Reflect on how you start your response: ▪️ “This is what 𝘐 did…” ▪️ “𝘞𝘦 (my team and I) did…” ▪️ “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 (my team) did it without me.” Do you feel the difference? Leadership isn’t just about you. It’s about your team. You facilitate the team’s thinking, but they achieve on their own. 🏊♀️ Lessons from the Pool: Coaching and Management in Business🏊♂️ Here’s my daughter swim training at 4°C (39°F)—whether it’s sun, rain, snow, or shine, she’s in the pool often like this one outdoors. Watching her swim got me thinking about coaching, both as a parent and in business. In sports, not every great swimmer makes a great coach. The same applies in business. Often, we promote top performers to managerial roles, assuming success will translate into effective leadership. But this can be a mistake. A stellar salesperson might excel at closing deals but struggle with the administrative and motivational aspects of management. When we misallocate roles, we lose a top performer and may end up with an unhappy manager. Instead, let's focus on placing people where they thrive. In swimming, the best coaches know how to motivate, inspire, and drive performance—not just swim fast. In your business, are your best performers always the managers? As I watched the Arsenal vs Porto Champions League game last night, I couldn't help but notice the impact that the coaches had on the game. It got me thinking about the similarities between the roles of coaches in sports and business. How I Found Fulfilment Moving from Stage to Coaching Many of us are on the journey of self-discovery and finding purpose. After 15 years in West End musicals, I wanted more than the thrill of the stage. While performing was exciting, it was physically demanding and left little room for the personal growth I wanted. Coaching at a West London tennis club, I found my new calling through conversations with ambitious CEOs, lawyers, and entrepreneurs striving for excellence. Their encouragement and drive inspired me to take a new path. Transitioning to sports coaching, and then leadership coaching, had its challenges. Facing the fear of the unknown meant embracing every learning opportunity, showing me the importance of investing in oneself and personal development. Now, I help professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs realise their potential and achieve transformative results. This journey has been about continuously learning, growing, and pursuing my goals with the support of mentors and coaches who provided invaluable advice and encouragement.
