Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate achievements, acknowledge much-needed progress, and promote hidden contributions – a chance to celebrate Black achievement by both acknowledging the struggles and honoring the triumphs. One such contribution, largely unknown to all but architectural historians, comes from the timeless elegance and brilliance of Paul R. Williams. We at HBC are honored that Williams’ story as a groundbreaking African-American architect intersects with our portfolio’s story. In the 1930s, his talent was integral to the design of the original Saks Fifth Avenue at 9600 Wilshire in Beverly Hills, manifesting our brand through what has become a cultural and aesthetic icon. The original Saks Fifth Avenue building in Beverly Hills, the work of Williams’ keen design sensibility, is proposed for restoration and landmark designation as part of the 9600 Wilshire community’s future development, ensuring that his contributions remain part of 9600 Wilshire for years to come. Williams’ unique style, however, has taken new shape at Saks Fifth Avenue's reimagined women's store in Beverly Hills which we reopened this past week. Our redesign is inspired by Williams’ signature style and pays homage to his lasting legacy. We encourage all to use Black History Month as an opportunity to learn more about Paul R. Williams and others whose contributions to our shared history are countless, transformative, and often overlooked.
