Last Thursday, the Huckabee LA Construction Management Team celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the new 3-story, 70-classroom, state-of-the-art Lynwood HS Classroom Building. We were honored to join city officials, school board members, and the Lynwood community in marking the start of this transformative project. The new facility will provide cutting-edge learning spaces for future generations, and we’re thrilled to be part of making it a reality. Here’s to building brighter futures together! - MOREgroup | PBK | Bernards | #weareMORE #architecture #design #education

Architecture is more than just the physical structure of a building – it’s fundamental to shaping how people experience and interact with the space. This is especially true when it comes to learning environments, where considered design can foster creativity and collaboration, and inspire greatness. From primary schools to universities, well-designed educational spaces can directly influence students’ academic success, teachers' effectiveness, and an overall sense of belonging. In primary and high schools, architecture plays a critical role in creating safe, engaging spaces where young minds can explore, learn, and grow. Open classrooms, natural light, flexible spaces, and easy access to nature can stimulate curiosity and encourage interactive learning. These elements support the development of critical thinking and social skills in students, while allowing them to feel more comfortable, supported and inspired. Having had a hand in the delivery of multiple learning spaces over the past 12 months while assisting Reitsma Constructions Pty Ltd, Rohrig Constructions, Stephen Edwards Constructions and Novati Constructions deliver for their clients, we’re keenly aware that great buildings are more than just functional. Whether it be the Northern Beaches Christian School’s STEM centre, Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta’s Brigid Shelly building, Pymble Ladies' College’s Grey House Precinct or Mount Carmel Catholic College’s Woodwork, Science, Technology and Applied Studies building, each of these structures has been purposefully designed and constructed to embody the values and aspirations of the institutions they house. Serving as a testament to Australia’s world leading approach to learning spaces is Darlington Public School in Chippendale, which beat all comers to win the World Building of the Year Award in the schools category at the 2024 World Architecture Festival. "The result of the project is poetic, a building in which topography and landscape, inside and outside, form and materials, flow seamlessly in an unexpectedly delightful way. It is also an inspirational proposition about the acknowledgement and reconciliation of historic difference - a pointer to brighter, better futures for all", WAF's Programme Director, Paul Finch, said of the project. Well deserved recognition for fjcstudio and A W Edwards on their achievement! 📸Image Credit: Brett Boardman 🎥Video Credit: Richard McGlone #Architecture #LearningSpaces #CampusDesign

Clackamas County Circuit Courthouse - A #PublicPrivatePartnership at the #AAJConference, Designing for Change: Architects #Transforming the #JusticeSystem On Sep 26, Debbie Spradley, Nancy Bush, Jon Kindrachuk, and Sean Link will be discussing the process and the details of the Clackamas County Courthouse project, which is being delivered via the PPP model: The remarkable growth of Clackamas County, Ore., rendered the existing county courthouse inadequate, and the financing modalities and schedules of yesterday impractical. The solution was a private-public partnership dedicated to crafting a trauma-informed courthouse. Our design for the new Clackamas County Courthouse rises to the needs of both modern civic and workplace life by prioritizing accessibility and connectivity, with thoughtful interior organization and connections to nature throughout. This works to foster community both internally — with common spaces, intuitive wayfinding, and clear sightlines — and with adjacent services, reducing the stress inherent to needlessly complex civic buildings. This responsibility to community and connection extends to the environment itself, with special care given to make the courthouse resilient to natural extremes and wildfires, while implementing a thoughtful water management system.

Bright Spaces, for Bright minds and Bright Futures I supported East Coast Architects in the design of two exemplary schools—7 Fountains Primary School and Vele Secondary School—where innovative daylighting strategies and smart lighting controls have transformed energy use in classrooms. Both schools feature simple, well-placed light switches that encourage the use of natural daylight and drastically reduce the need for artificial lighting. The experience at 7 Fountains helped refine the approach at Vele, where energy bills were compared with those of a neighboring school, showing remarkable savings. Read the attached where I explain how these strategies have created brighter, more energy-efficient spaces for learning—without relying on costly technology. #DaylightDesign, #EnergyEfficiency #PassiveDesign #SustainableArchitecture #SchoolDesign Mary Haw PJC+Partners Steve Kinsler Angela Buckland Unfortunately, East Coast Architects closed their doors after 25 years of some amazing and award winning work as Social Architecture. Their projects are archived here (https://lnkd.in/dTBs8y7D). I will include this link in future posts related to their projects. Did you know that schoolchildren spend 8-900 hours at school each year? ⌚ That’s a lot of time, so our children should have the best indoor spaces to live, play, and learn in. As Europe, including the UK, faces a surge in school construction, it’s key that our architects and educators rethink school design. Here are three key elements that can improve school environments 👇

Rising construction costs and other challenges in the Chicago market have prompted experienced developers to explore markets in the South and West, where population growth and political landscapes are viewed as more supportive. “Chicago has a lot of really strong, well put-together and sophisticated development groups that used to make a living in Chicago. [The city] has a collection of great architecture and we’ve lost steam, it’s going to take a while to see the next group of great buildings go up,’ – Craig Pryde, Principal, KTGY Learn how developers are navigating these changes and finding new opportunities beyond the city, covered by Crain's Chicago Business: https://lnkd.in/gy8V27DV #KTGY #InTheNews #Chicago #RealEstate #Development #UrbanDevelopment #Architecture

In 2007, Plan B Engineering was asked to provide a design to stabilize the Renwick Ruins, once known as the Smallpox Hospital. This hospital complex, a creation of James Renwick, Jr.—renowned for his Gothic Revival masterpiece, St. Patrick's Cathedral—had fallen into ruin after years of neglect. Despite this, its distinctive granite gothic facade presented a unique opportunity for preservation through careful stabilization and repair. We focused our efforts on stabilizing the facade walls still standing, preventing any further deterioration or collapse. This step was crucial in preserving a vital piece of New York City's architectural legacy. As a result of our work, these ruins have withstood nearly two decades of storms and exposure, remaining intact as they await transformation into a public park. Today, as part of a broader initiative, there's a push to reinvigorate this historic site in memory of those we've lost to COVID-19, transforming it into a space of remembrance and reflection. This endeavor bridges the gap between the past and the present, offering a place for the community to honor the past while embracing the future. Plan B Engineering is honored to have played a role in preserving the Renwick Ruins, and we look forward to seeing this landmark evolve into a cherished community space. "A WELL-DESIGNED SPACE IS WHERE THE RIGHT THINGS HAPPEN.” - Sally Augustin Our proposal has gone through many different scenarios but by retaining a focus on community and culture we wanted our proposal to encapsulate and create this unique network of hubs around the City of London. By using the existing buildings and grid of the city we designed our proposal to optimism all the activities and users the City could encounter. By not only creating this network of canopies that the community could activate but also these organism-like structures that would embed themselves into and onto the structures above. Allowing them to be activated by the needs of the producers. Whether that be production facilities, greenhouses or housing, the structures could accommodate. Together, these structures create a subversive community that disrupts and breaks away from the established formalities of the City of London and from Capitalism as a whole. _ Academic Project, University of Westminster _ Space + Identity (Design Project) _ January 2024 #architecture #architectstudent #maarchitecture #archlover #archdaily #architectjobs
