They say money talks. But did you know it also tells stories? These banknotes, from our archives, offer a glimpse into the history of global trade. Each note represents a chapter in the story of how goods, services and cultures have flowed around the world. Check out the full exhibition, which looks at the rich and varied history of our Hong Kong banknote issue, from the earliest designs to today’s modern Hong Kong dollar notes. https://grp.hsbc/6041tNiCN #HSBC #GlobalTrade

  • $1 note issued in 1872
  • $5 specimen note, 1901. The background is filled with minute spiral engravings, which are printed in different coloured inks
  • $500 note, 1927. Our head office became a key feature depicted on the reverse of our banknotes.
  • The design for the $10 note was unchanged from 1959 to 1985. The reverse features HSBC's third generation Hong Kong head office. The Art Deco building was the tallest in Asia when completed in 1935.
  • Hong Kong's very first $20 note was issued by HSBC in 1986. The Clock Tower of the former Kowloon Railway Station and a view of Victoria Harbour provide an evocative scene on the reverse. Our new head office premises, officially opened in 1986, features prominently in the centre

⠀ I'm a slave, for you.

Money does not exist. Inheritance does not exist. You made it all up so that you can exploit others. I often cry a lot because of the ways of the world, I am forced to live in. Forced by being born without concern. And then, given this wornderful gift of being alive, my life's worth is only defined by how good of a slave I am. It is being defined by companies like yours. You, and others alike, decided that I will be born into slavery and that I will not be allowed to live my life. And there's nothing I can do about it, but being ective on social media. Your vintage banknote is only good to help with my running nose to me .

These post remind me of my 2 day orientation at HSBC which is brilliant 🤩 Glad it’s mandatory for contractors too because those 2 days instill a sense of pride & legacy about the Bank and how you as an individual participate in the wider organisation and global ecosystem. A great idea which I haven’t experienced at any other bank I’ve freelanced at.

Wow, this is fascinating! It's incredible how much history and culture can be captured in something as everyday as a banknote. I never really thought about how each note can tells a story of its own, reflecting the times and the trade dynamics of its era. It sounds like a unique way to explore the evolution of global trade and the role Hong Kong has played in it. Thanks for sharing this! #CuriousMind #BanknoteStories

We are currently living in the last great age of banknotes. I believe 20 years from today banknotes will be completely replaced by digital payments.
