#Sustainability continues to invite scepticism and struggle for some associations, and these organisations are asking themselves several questions, namely: What will the future of sustainability look like, and what is required to implement it? André Vietor, Nancy Tan, CMP, Ksenija Polla, CMP, CICE and Noel Mitchell of the World PCO Alliance were asked to tackle the complexities implicit in sustainability, and they share their experiences in this article. https://lnkd.in/dTdHAcpw

Wondering how to make your events more sustainable?🍃 Following the release of our 2024 Sustainability Guide earlier this year, our very own Ben Hoeksma, Senior Director, Global Programme Lead, sat down with Smart Meetings to provide greener guidance to planners. Ben shares further insight into DEI initiatives, conducting client research, and the ever-evolving sustainability landscape. "There’s a tremendous amount of willingness for people to do things, but they’re also looking for direction - just introduce something. Start doing something that impacts today, which can become the norm." Read in full ➡️ https://bit.ly/49j4XMB #Sustainability #MeetingsAndEvents #WeAreBCDME

🌍 Last month, our climate expert Sebastian Howarth represented Nordic Sustainability at the European Outdoor Summit (EOS) where decarbonisation took center stage. Alongside industry experts like Julie Gretton and Arjen Laan, Sebastian shared some key insights: 💡 Decarbonisation isn’t just a supply chain issue—we must take responsibility for our own emissions. 💡 Sustainability must be a clear, c-suite priority and viewed as an opportunity, not a burden. 💡 Act now where you can, while planning boldly for long-term change.
🧗♀️ Decarbonisation of the outdoor industry Last month, I had the privilege of representing Nordic Sustainability at the European Outdoor Summit (EOS) at The Cambridge Union, alongside the amazing Julie Gretton and Arjen Laan, with Katy Stevens facilitating a great discussion on decarbonisation During the event, one of the most common questions I received was: What happens once targets are set? Here’s what I shared: 🔍 Debunking misconceptions It’s not just a supply chain issue. The narrative of, "Oh, it’s all in our Scope 3 and out of our control" isn’t the full story. Let's find ways to take responsibility for the emissions we are emitting 💡 Building the business case Sustainability must be on the c-suite agenda and it must be a clear agenda. Leaders are great at achieving things they try to achieve but often sustainability is confusing and filled with conflict. Let's simplify this and ensure we are working on the right actions. Approach with empathy—this is a collective journey and people will always have conflicting demands. It is essential that sustainability is perceived positively and not a hinderance ⏳ Yes, please plan for the long-term, but don't forget to act now! Start by reducing emissions in areas where it’s easiest in the short-term. Simultaneously, think bold and get planning for the hard to abate. It takes time to change business models and conjure up new ways of making money so we'd better start soon. My takeaways from the event: 💬 Collaboration is key—we're stronger together. 📜 A wave of new regulation is coming, but let’s lead the conversation, not just follow the legislation (thanks for the line, Julian!). 💭 Sustainability is more than compliance—it’s a tool for innovation. Events like this reignite enthusiasm in a potentially gloomy sector. They highlight the opportunities ahead and help us momentarily set aside the daily obstacles we face. As Mark Shayler so eloquently put it, our job as sustainability professionals is to move hearts and minds while positioning sustainability as a driver of innovation, not just another box to tick. Andrew Rough and our friends at ACS exemplify this by showing us how changing the narrative can completely reshape the way we generate revenue. Final thanks to all the attendees, speakers, and organisers of the event, and especially to Krišjānis of Spectre A/S for connecting me with the European Outdoor Group (EOG) in the first place!

𝐑𝐗’𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 Highlighting a sustainable future, the Meetings Africa 2024 event, showcased by the Event Greening Forum, marked a pivotal moment in the MICE industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Alex Alles from the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) ignited a comprehensive dialogue on achieving net zero emissions, a goal that resonates deeply with industry leaders and stakeholders. As the conversation evolves, RX, a global leader in event organising, takes centre stage with their ambitious and strategic journey towards crafting a comprehensive net zero roadmap. 𝐑𝐗'𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐨 In the ever-evolving landscape of corporate sustainability, RX has embarked on a significant journey to develop a comprehensive net zero roadmap. This initiative reflects RX's commitment to addressing its environmental impact, particularly focusing on the challenging Scope 3 emissions that encompass indirect activities across its extensive value chain. Scope 3 emissions are notoriously difficult to manage owing to their indirect nature, involving everything from the services and goods a company purchases to the disposal of the products it sells. RX has highlighted the complexity of collecting consistent and accurate data from diverse sources, such as venues and suppliers, who often have varied reporting standards. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 To address these challenges, RX has adopted a flexible and iterative approach to its roadmap, viewing it as a dynamic document that evolves in response to new insights and data. This approach allows RX to refine its strategies continually and respond proactively to emerging sustainability challenges. 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 Recognising that the journey to sustainability varies widely depending on the size and scope of a company, RX has provided practical advice for smaller enterprises. These companies are encouraged to identify and leverage existing sustainable practices within their operations and focus on areas where they can make the most significant immediate impact. This strategy enables smaller entities to contribute meaningfully to sustainability without being overwhelmed by the breadth of Scope 3 challenges. 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Looking to the future, RX remains committed to enhancing its sustainability roadmap by integrating more detailed data and developing robust offsetting strategies. The company aims to set an industry standard for sustainability practices, particularly in how events are organised and managed globally. This commitment to continuous improvement not only enhances RX's operational sustainability but also sets a benchmark for the industry.

Sustainable solutions cannot arise as an afterthought. By designing for sustainability, organisations can reduce their environmental impact from the outset, using creativity to produce better outcomes. This relates to all of business, whether planning events or designing product packaging. The Sustainable Events Company creates, manages and delivers sustainable, net zero corporate and private events which are high-impact for their clients and low-impact on the planet. They believe that designing for sustainability is an opportunity not a burden, and they show that it doesn't need to compromise visual effect. Head to our recent Q&A with Jay Tyson, Director at The Sustainable Events Company, to learn more about what they do as well as Jay’s advice to organisations looking to run more environmentally friendly events ➡ https://lnkd.in/eUkd-nXm #sustainablevents #sustainabledesign #corporateevents #netzero #creativedesign #esg
