News media got excited recently with the rise in the number of new dwellings approved for construction in October. Some reports suggested this meant the worst is over for the housing shortage crisis. Sadly, they missed the central point. Doesn't matter how many approvals there are, the only irrelevant number is how many are actually built. And therein lies the problem. The cost of building homes is so high and there are so many issues, including a shortage of tradespeople, that many approved dwellings are not being built because it's simply not financially. Liable to proceed.
