It was incredible at the weekend to see Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston finish 3rd in the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour at the stunning Crans-Montana golf course in Switzerland. The reason it was incredible was because Beef has had to overcome potentially career ending injuries to keep coming back. Not just coming back but coming back to be on the verge of winning again. Is there anything sweeter than overcoming adversity and proving to yourself and others that you could come back and be successful, sometimes even more successful than you were before. It’s dosent have to be injury, it could be any set back in your career. It’s easy to give up when it’s hard, the hard part it to keep turning up, the hard part is to keep being 1% better than you were yesterday and achieving things no one thought you were capable of. Sometimes the goal isn't to be the best, it's to be better than yesterday, even if it’s 1% better. The hard times are where you learn more about yourself, the hard days are the most important ones. It's easy to turn up when you feel good, but it's crucial to show up when you don't feel like it, even if you do less than you hope, your still doing more than if you did nothing at all. Turning up when it’s hard reaffirms your identity. It's about becoming the type of person you want to be. Today, Turn up, Do your best, with what you have, right now and everytime, even when no one is watching and sooner or later your potential ability will frighten you. The History of Awards When you think about hosting the next R &R- one tends to instantly think of a shiny reminder of all the hard work of the employees. The feeling of your name getting announced, your team cheering for you and a sense of achievement..  Well, contrary to the modern day feeling- trophies have a rather dark origin. The term trophy comes from the French word “ Trophee” which means prize of war and Greek word “ Tropaion” meaning for defeat. Trophies were then made/ collected from soldiers of battles- including head hunting or other body parts post war. You would have seen this in the movie Padmavat or in Game of thrones.  In ancient times trophies were given during athletic competitions too- this time instead of human heads- the people were awarded with olive wreaths or ceramic amphora bottles ( which resemble the modern trophy cups)  Later in the medieval times- awards became more elaborate with precious metals like actual gold and silver being used. Knights were given swords and armor as a symbol of their bravery and to recognize their rank and achievements.  Today, the award game has changed 360 degrees. Right from the famous cup shaped trophies, to the Oscar, The Golden Boot, Medals, Pins, Badges, certificates and even plates. Today, they serve not only as symbols of achievement but also as tools to create memorable and motivating experiences for those who receive them. My Motorsport Journey: Lap 8: Officially becoming a Volunteer Marshal - A few weeks ago, I attended a taster session as a marshal, and I had an incredible experience that sparked my commitment to this role. I'm excited to share that I've now joined the British Motorsport Marshals Club (BMMC) to volunteer more frequently. Through marshalling, I look forward to enhancing several key skills: 🔍 Attention to Detail: In motorsport, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference. ⚡ Quick Decision-Making: The ability to make rapid decisions under pressure is invaluable in emergency management, leadership roles, and any fast-paced work environment. 🗣️ Communication Skills: Strong communication is essential for effective teamwork, client interactions, and leadership. 🤝 Reliability: In my opinion, reliability is the most important quality for any professional role, especially those with significant accountability. 📅 Organizational Skills: These skills are crucial for project management, administrative roles, and coordinating multiple activities. 🌟 Adaptability and Flexibility: Being adaptable is beneficial in dynamic work environments and roles that require flexibility and innovation. Are We Doing Enough for Veterans Through Golf Outreach Programs? I’ve been reflecting on how much impact organizations like PGA HOPE (as the standard for #Golf and #Veterans) and others are truly having on the veteran community. Don’t get me wrong, programs like these are incredible for their efforts to provide golf as therapy and employment pathways. But when we look at the numbers, it begs the question: Could we be doing more? Take a look at this spitball proposition for how a facility near Pinehurst, NC (close to Fort Liberty) could serve a broader veteran population. The numbers paint a clear picture of what’s possible: 📍 Potential Population Served (90-minute radius): Active-duty personnel: ~50,000 Reservists/Guardsmen: ~100,000 Veterans in Eastern NC: 300,000+ Total Potential Population: 750,000+ If we ran concurrent programs across multiple facilities, here’s what the impact could look like: 🟢 Golf Therapy Programs: Serve up to 300,000 participants annually (~40% of total potential population) Economic impact of mental health benefits: $4.56 billion annually 🟢 Employment Opportunities: Create 250 full-time jobs and 125 part-time jobs, prioritizing veterans Estimated annual economic impact: $750 million 🟢 Veterans' Employment Training: Train 1,500 veterans annually in golf industry skills Achieve an 80% job placement rate 🟢 Mental Health Impact: Reduce veteran suicide rates by 25% in the region Save an estimated 3,750 lives annually What’s more, programs like PGA HOPE could feed into the adaptive golf community through USAGA. If just 0.5% of PGA HOPE participants transitioned to USAGA annually, we’d see: 1,500 new adaptive golf members in Year 1 15,000 annual participants in years to follow. ❓ So here’s the big question: Are we really maximizing the potential of these programs? I hear so many organizations say, “Our board is happy with our numbers.” But does that mean we should stop striving for more? Is hitting the minimum threshold enough when there are hundreds of thousands of veterans still underserved? I love what #PGA, #LIV, #USGA, #USAGA, and similar programs do. But imagine the potential if we scaled these efforts, expanded reach, and embraced collaboration to truly make an impact.
