**Content Warning** I've been so reluctant to share this post, but the sad and tragic reality is, this is life in Europe's poorest country. Setting aside opinions, and the obvious need for education and birth control, particularly amongst Moldova's poorest communities, precious children are suffering under the indiscriminate weight of extreme poverty. Over the weekend, my beautiful wife Zoe Lomas and I were called to a house where a 2 month old baby had succumb to the desperate conditions his parents find themselves in, a victim of happen-chance, being born in a country without adequate social care to prevent unnecessary deaths. This post isn't to make anyone feel bad, it's simply to reveal the challenges Hope4 Moldova finds itself in, when tackling with every day issues the people of Moldova, as well as the temporarily displaced Ukrainians find themselves in. Whilst it was obviously too late for this precious baby, Nigel Williams of Afford A Print Limited immediately stepped in offering his company's support, and buying sufficient wood to last them the winter. Nigel has been a long-time supporter of ours, and was one of the founding members of our 52 Club, this precious family now firmly within our sights, our motivation to protect the other children living in the house. On hearing the news of this baby's passing, I was inconsolable, the painful truth it could have some how been avoided, a renewed determination, to reach as many desperate families as we possibly can. And so, thank you to everyone who extends our reach into the most unimaginable circumstances, bringing hope where before none existed. Together #WeAreHope4

The statistics are jarring — nearly half of all Mozambican women aged 20-24 are married before they turn 18, and 14% are married before they turn 14. This scenario is difficult for many of us to comprehend, especially those of us who have had the privilege of choosing when and whom to marry. But child marriage is a reality that continues to affect millions of young girls across Africa, robbing them of their education, health, and potential. In Zambezia, Mozambique, girls like Vanessa, who are rescued from such marriages, are fighting back with the help of organizations like UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP). Vanessa’s journey from a child bride to a hopeful student reflects the resilience and strength of girls who are given a second chance. Despite the adversity, she is now aiming for a future as a nurse or doctor, thanks to the support services that helped reintegrate her into her family and education. For girls on the margins, the fighters like Vanessa, every bit of help counts. These girls need more than rescue. They need a system that supports their dreams and rights to education and safety. Want to make a real difference? Take 5 minutes to learn more about how you can help young girls fight against child marriage. Your time could change someone’s life. Today, on International #DayoftheGirl, we defend girls’ vision for a future without child marriage. In Malawi, it’s estimated that 38 out of every 100 girls are married before their 18th birthday. USAID, through the PROPEL Health project, supported Malawi’s Ministry of Gender to revise its National Strategy on Ending Child Marriage, hailed by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Child Affairs Justin Hamela as, “a strong coordination tool and a means to break the foundation of child marriage in Malawi.” The strategy aims to significantly reduce, and ultimately end, child marriage by: ✔️ Addressing the root causes of child marriage ✔️ Promoting girls’ education and empowerment ✔️ Improving legal frameworks ✔️ Enhancing protective environments for children Let's come together to make “Girls’ Vision for the Future” a reality. ### Celebrating International Kinship Care Week As we recognize #InternationalKinshipCareWeek, it's crucial to highlight the vital role of kinship care in Africa, particularly in Kenya. Globally, approximately 13 million children are living in kinship care, offering them stability and support. In Kenya, recent data indicates that around 250,000 children are cared for by their relatives, with a significant portion being raised by #grandparents. These caregivers often face immense challenges, primarily financial. The Kenyan government introduced a #cashtransfer program in 2004, providing a monthly stipend of KSh 2,000 for kinship caregivers—an amount that remains below the poverty line given the current rising cost of living. With ongoing #CareReform efforts, there’s a growing possibilities to increasing the number of children in kinship care. We urge the Kenyan government and its development partners to review and enhance the cash transfer system, ensuring that all #kinshipcaregivers receive adequate support. Research shows that direct unconditional cash transfers, like those implemented by #GiveDirectly, can lead to significant improvements in the lives of recipients. As we also commemorate the #InternationalDayToEradicatePoverty, let's advocate for increased resources for kinship caregivers to help alleviate poverty and strengthen family ties. Together, we can create a brighter future for Kenya's #childrenwithoutparental!

📢It can be done. Ending child marriage can reduce lifetime exposure to gender-based violence (GBV) by up to 60%, as early marriage increases the risk of intimate partner violence. Studies show that girls married before 18 are three times more likely to experience abuse. When girls stay in school, they gain critical life skills and economic opportunities, breaking cycles of dependency and violence. Every year of delayed marriage reduces the likelihood of GBV, creating safer futures. Investing in girls isn’t just the right thing—it’s smart policy. #EndChildMarriage #GBVPrevention #GirlsEducation

📢 Early Child Marriages. These not only rob girls of their childhood but often limit their education, increase health risks, and ultimately affect their economic independence. The cycle of poverty and inequality is passed down to them when they are deprived of the chance to build their futures. A true champion against this practice, Chief Theresa Kachindamoto of Malawi, has set a powerful example by ending over 850 child marriages in the last three years. Her relentless dedication to safeguarding girls’ futures is truly an inspiration. Leaders like Chief Kachindamoto show us that real change is possible when we prioritize the welfare and rights of not just young people but everyone in the community.

Thank you for giving voice to those who do not have one, and for reminding us that we can all do a little to help others who can only dream of the things that we often take for granted, such as heat in our homes.
