Last week completely caught us off guard - it turned out to be one of the best weeks we've ever had since starting this firm. Normally, this time of year is a little quieter, but the amount of businesses reaching out to us was eye-opening. What struck us most wasn't just the volume, but the pattern in the stories we were hearing. So many businesses shared the same frustrations: no communication from their previous accountants, late filings that caused them unnecessary stress, being left in the dark with no idea what they should or shouldn't be doing, and the sinking feeling that they weren't saving as much money as they could. Some even said they dreaded speaking to their accountants because it always felt cold, transactional, or just too confusing. Hearing these stories made us realise how widespread these problems are, and honestly, it's disheartening. Running a business is hard enough without having to feel like you're on your own when it comes to your finances. That's why we're so passionate about what we do - because it doesn't have to be this way. We've built this firm with a different mindset. We believe accountants shouldn't just show up to tick boxes and submit forms; we're here to be real partners in your journey. We want to help your business thrive, not just survive. Writing a book on strategy specifically for accountants was never on my radar until Covid struck. But doing so made sense to be able to offer the firms we worked with a strategic framework to re-position their businesses in light of the new environment we all faced. One of the many things that struck me when writing the book, and when working with accountants explaining this strategic framework, is that very often owners of firms are unsure or vague about their personal goals. So many people set up businesses to gain freedom; to earn more and to reduce their stress. But quickly they find themselves working 100% IN the business and not working ON the business. Which usually means the opposite thing happens - that is, they have little or no freedom; increased stress and probably earn less too! Being really clear about your personal goals is the first key step in strategic health. The business must work for you - not the other way round. Some of the most rewarding sessions we’ve had with accountants is facilitating deep, honest conversations with the firm’s owners. These conversations are so useful at providing complete clarity about earnings expectations; exit routes; timescales to exit as well as the type of work they want to do. So how clear are you on your personal goals? And how well do you know the goals of your co-owners?
