Let’s Talk About Unpaid Internships in Graphic Design As a graphic designer, you may find unpaid internship opportunities, especially when you're just starting. While gaining experience is important, it's also crucial to understand your worth. Here are a few things to consider before saying "yes" to unpaid work: 1️⃣ Value Your Skills: Your time and effort are valuable even if you're a beginner. Design work requires creativity, time, and expertise—skills that deserve compensation. 2️⃣ Experience Doesn’t Always Equal Payment: While unpaid internships may promise "experience for exposure," it's important to ask yourself if you're getting the growth you need for your career. 3️⃣ Alternatives to Unpaid Work: If you're looking to build your portfolio, try creating personal projects, collaborating with peers, or working with non-profits that align with your values. This way, you can still gain experience without compromising your worth. 4️⃣ Know When to Walk Away: If an internship isn’t offering meaningful learning experiences or networking opportunities, it may not be worth your time. Remember, your creativity is valuable. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and seek opportunities that respect your skills! --------------------------------------------------------- Want to start your Graphic Designer career but don't know where to start? Some of my graphic design students are still struggling to find internships for this summer. Do you have any tips for ways that these students can increase their odds of landing a 120-hour internship? What would make you want to hire a graphic design intern? #graphicdesign #internship #workintegratedlearning

A small message to all students who are looking for internships. We have been receiving numerous internship requests, and we are not satisfied with their quality of projects and emails we receive. Sharing a very honest review here. #TiredOfReviewing 🤖 Below are few things I find very frustrating while viewing internship applications. 1.Please don't send ChatGPT-generated emails when applying for internships. We are humans, not chatbots, and we don't read AI-generated content. 2.Please use online portfolios and attach links to your work instead of sending us 500MB files. We don’t have too much time to spend on viewing your projects. 3.A minimum of 5 personal design projects is required when you apply at Studiodraft. After 2-3 years of college, we expect to see at least 5 personal projects in your portfolio, in addition to college assignments. 4.Design a portfolio that reflects your personality and graphic style, not some random free stock templates. So next time you are applying for a job or internship please look into these things. It's just work, it's about how well you communicate and present your projects to others. #internship #designintern #designerjob #designjob #designstudio #hiring #jobs #painpoints #tips

Summer Recap: Graphic Intern at the Methodology and Evaluation Research Core Facility 📊 Another highlight of my summer was working at the MERC Facility! My main goal was to transfer and update their website to the new system at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 💻 For the website, I had the pleasure of: 1. Updating graphics to fit the brand aesthetic and goals. 2. Making new graphics to visualize MERC's workflow and services. 2. Edited videos of training and conference presentation samples. 3. Gathering information about full-time team members to add more personality to their bio pages. Although the new website is not live yet, I'll share it here when it is! In addition to updating their website, I also: 1. Updated poster boards for conferences (pictured below). 2. Created fun graphics for use around the office. 3. Posted news updates to Instagram and LinkedIn. I owe a special thanks to Nova Gocchi Carrasco who oversaw me in this internship position. I appreciated her guidance over the summer and will miss working with her and the entire MERC team! Not only did this internship allow me to independently explore and develop new design skills in Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, but I also learned more about data analytics and how design can be used to share key findings! #studentinternship #designinternship #careerbuilding #graphicdesign
