Two weeks ago, on election day in the United States, I could think of no more appropriate way to mark that grim occasion than with a visit to the altar of Santa Muerte—aka La Flaca, aka La Huesuda, aka the White Girl and White Sister, the Lady of Shadows, the Mexican folk saint of death. She’s Mexico’s most dependable worker of miracles, the faithful will tell you, and so I thought, sure, why not: I’ll go pray. This is the latest piece for Julian's, my project to write a travel handbook for curious travelers to Mexico City. Not a dining guide. Not a list of restaurants or bars or hotels or boutiques. But a series of on-the-ground, thoroughly researched, brightly-written accounts of one of the biggest cities in the world. The goal: a printed handbook, pocket-sized, that fills the empty space between book-length travelogues and vacuous top ten "must-see" listicles. Something you can read in a single sitting and that gives you a deeper sense of the city's culture, beyond what you can buy at the stores. Come follow along, and come visit soon.

In his "Essayes or Counsels, Civill and Morall (1625)," Francis Bacon's essay OF TRAVEL offers 5 truths that present-day travelers ought to consider in order for their experiences to be transformative: 1. Possess some knowledge of the language and culture 2. Keep a journal of your observations 3. Have a knowledgable guide 4. Participate in the local rhythm of life 5. Upon return, allow your travels to have an impact on the manner in which you live. Without these, ofttimes travel yields to unintentional ethno/ego-centric motivations rather than serving as a formative experience.
