When it comes to retail displays, LCD screens are a game-changer for customer experience. As Marek Pietrzak from L'Oréal pointed out, there are a few key factors that make a big difference: viewing angles, brightness, and contrast. 1. Viewing Angle: Marek suggests the ideal viewing angle should be close to 180 degrees. In busy stores, customers come from all directions, so it’s important that the screen is clear from any angle to keep them engaged. 2. Brightness & Contrast: With retail spaces often being bright, especially with LED lighting, screens need to be bright enough to stand out. When a display is used in an application, it will attract the human eyes and the intention for an interaction is about to begin. In most products the display is “the face” of the product and it can create a virtual handshake between the user and the equipment. Then we can start to enter data or receive information on the display. Displays with integrated touch panel is a commonly used interface and is a part of numerous applications that plays an important role in our daily lives. Just think of the use for ticketing machines, check-in terminals at the airport, self-ordering systems, fuel pumps, EV charge posts, domestic appliances, door phones etc., there you can find a TFT display with a touch panel that helps you to operate the equipment. There are quite some details to consider when designing a new product using display & touch. Does it require single or multi touch point functions, is it used both in- and outdoor, the operating temperature range, the backlight brightness to provide excellent readability and there could be other topics which must be considered for the project. A recent installation of one Ledman Ds0.7mm (PSE Flip Chip COB) screen in a fashion store in Akihabara, Japan, has garnered significant attention. The screen’s super HD resolution, vibrant colors, and exceptional clarity have captivated a large number of onlookers, drawing them to watch it and touch it. In addition to the stunning visuals displayed on the screen, viewers are pleasantly surprised by the minimal heat emitted by the screen, a notable difference from traditional LED displays. "We desire a high-quality screen for our retail shops, but sometimes we hesitate to install one that is too nice." — A shop manager once expressed concerns about LED screens for their retail establishment, highlighting an interesting dilemma. While seemingly contradictory, these concerns do hold merit. A high-quality screen can significantly enhance brand presentation and captivate customers' attention, thereby boosting sales. I loved being in Berlin recently for IFA, Europe’s largest consumer electronics trade show. Amongst all the washing machines, TVs, dishwashers and refrigerators was our Chris Lefteri Design CMF display for TCL. All credit to TCL. A lot of brands embrace CMF nowadays, but none explicitly talk about it. I think it’s bold TCL did, and shows a confidence in the leadership to invest in something like CMF. I'd love to see more of that. For me, CMF is all about how a product makes us feel. In a way it’s intangible to assess, but it's also the most tangible part of a product: it’s the first point at which a customer engages with a product: the touch, translucency/opacity, the sound it makes, its scent. Ultimately its a tool for storytelling. CMF is the undersung hero in the design and manufacturing process. If we want customers to choose sustainably, it’s how something makes them feel good that will build in the new long-term behaviours we need to see.
