Quick tips to everyone who are reaching out to people on Linkedin for referrals. I have had a sudden burst of DMs seeking referrals. Although usually I am not comfortable with referring anyone that I haven't directly worked with, I understand the market has not been so great and the anxiety surrounding it. There are a few things to ensure to maximise a chance of cold referral. When you DM anyone 1. Intro - A line or two about you and your formal background. Why would you make a great candidate for this role ? 2. Skill set - About projects you have done so far or currently working along with tech stack employed 3. Job ID - Relevant job Id(s) from the career site 4. Resume - Preferably attached as PDF into the DM. Not as a Google drive link. Make it easier to download the resume. I have applied to 70+ jobs via LinkedIn in EasyApply. I have never gotten anything but an automated rejection, and in some cases, the job listing even says “apply on our website” which negates the entire point of EasyApply. The more I use this site, the more it feels like a scam. I’d love to have a positive attitude about it, but so far as a job seeker, I’ve seen zero upsides. Sure, I can see jobs that list who the hiring manager is, but there shouldn’t be an onus on us to message them directly to get them to actually look our resumes. That’s the entire point of the application process, but y’all don’t want to admit that your AI screeners and filters are denying quality candidates because you aren’t taking the time to review applications properly and refuse to admit that the automation is doing a poor job that leaves candidates like us looking into temporary jobs in different industries just to get a foot in the door and pray something eventually opens up once we’re in somewhere. Instead, this place is just Work Facebook and my feed consistently recommends me posts from recruiters lecturing each other about being the problem while doing nothing to change the problems in their profession. You can blame hiring managers for waiting for the perfect applicant all you want, but a majority of the managers never even see the resume of someone they’d want because of your gatekeeping.

The traditional funnel approach used by many IT recruiters, relying on mass email campaigns, is often ineffective. This method primarily attracts active job seekers and fails to reach the majority of developers who are open to new opportunities but not actively searching. As annoying as rejection emails are, if you like the company, join their Talent Community. Joining their talent database means that when a role is posted that matches your interests or is similar what you initially applied to that you’ll be notified. On the reverse side if they’re optimizing their CRM then they can source your profile as a candidate whose already interested (what we call a warm lead). Maybe you applied to a role but weren’t a fit for whatever reason. If I don’t get the proper candidate or enough candidates, I’m going to the CRM first. Personally I’m a fan of sourcing this way. It’s working smarter not harder and I’ve had a few candidates turn into hires this way. Plus most times this is a platform they’re paying for… we might as well use it, right? If you're receiving immediate rejections after applying for multiple positions within the same company, there's a possibility that your email is flagged and placed on a 'blacklist,' leading to automatic rejection. To avoid this issue, consider creating a new email address when applying for future opportunities, especially if you’ve been consistently rejected without any feedback.
