Born in South Korea, Velastegui's interest in science and technology was sparked at an early age by watching "Star Trek: The Next Generation." She earned her BS in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech and MS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley. Her stellar career highlights across some of tech’s largest companies include: ► 2009: At Apple, she contributed to the development of the first MacBook Air and iPad and later worked on projects like CarPlay and iCloud. ► 2014: At Google, she led the Silicon and Architecture Roadmap team for Nest products. ► 2017: At Microsoft, Velastegui spearheaded the integration of AI into various products like LinkedIn and Bing and led the charge in utilizing GPT-3 for internal projects and explorations. ► 2022: At Aptiv, she focuses on advancing the software-defined future of mobility, leading 2,500 professionals the firm. Velastegui was recognized by Business Insider as one of the "Most Powerful Female Engineers" in 2017 and 2018, and she won the Lumiere Distinguished Leadership Award. “For women in tech, if you’ve ever been part of a transformation, adoption, or change management, you have a right to be at the table, so don’t be afraid to take your seat there.” - Sophia Velastegui Now that’s a powerful statement. And I wholly endorse it! 💪🏾 #womenintech #artificialintelligence

Research or Corporate? Another dilemma many of us face in our careers is fulltime Research in a typical university setup vs a Corporate role, even if it is in a R&D team. I faced this issue when I was a research student in the Robotics Research Center, NTU. I felt that continuing the research role for a few more years would leave only one career path in front of me – an academic role. I decided to shift to the corporate world. Part-time research is a different ball game and we will not be able to give our undivided attention. What are the differences between a research role and a corporate role? - Research – you have the freedom to choose your area and depth, sometimes even going down a rabbit hole before your guide gives a strict warning to back out. A lot of patience is required to see results. Some topics could be ahead of its time, like the modular robot project I worked on (the image below). Some may not see light at the end of the day. There are also chances for serendipity – the focus is one topic while some other unexpected positive, useful result(s) comes out of the research. - Corporate – the research we do should have commercial potential, or RoI for the money invested. So patience required or found is much less. The breadth of topics we get to work on is huge, depending on the company. In my case, the stint at General Electric’s GRC or Global Research Center took me to many places – from Edison’s lab in Schenectady to Energy, Plastics, Aviation and more businesses. Change and reorg happens quickly if results are not delivered and according to business and market dynamics. We need to stay updated as the rate of obsolescence if much faster than the academia. Have you faced a research vs corporate role confusion? How did you handle it? One approach could be to stay in a R&D, innovation, thought leadership role at the intersection of research and business applications, with ongoing collaboration with academic partners. #reskilling #lifelonglearning #innovation

BUT ONLY IF YOU WORK AT ASML 😉 We all know that ASML is one of the world’s most important manufacturers of chip-making equipment. But did you know that ASML also has the most advanced organization in well-being which I’ve come across in my career? In the past I worked as a consultant and was hired via my personal company by multinationals such as #philips, #nestle, #nxp, #signify, #novartis, #lumileds, #nexperia and #nespresso. Yet, it’s high tech ASML that knows the importance of keeping employees active and takes action to ensure it. ⭐ June is their ‘Well-being Month’, and their open-minded senior management together with Mariska Baauw have invited me to do a presentation on The Art of Relaxation in the Office. On Wednesday, June 5th, from 1:00-3:00 PM in Auditorium B, I'll be presenting a typical "Own Your Life Journeys" workshop. This will be my fifth workshop at ASML, and it promises to be creative and entertaining. It will cover: 1. The purpose of life 2. Cultural or historical anecdotes 3. The biology of relaxation 4. Increasing participants' awareness 5. Tips on quickly relaxing in the office, and experience it yourself! I believe that every observation combines perspective and perception. In my last workshop, I used Leonardo da Vinci's perspective. Can you guess the historical perspective I'll use this time from the attached picture? Looking forward to seeing you all on June 5th in Veldhoven ….but only if you work at ASML. Be kind to yourself and enjoy your day! 🤗 Rob Maas Founder and Director of Own Your Life Journeys #ASML #Leadership #wellbeing #personaldevelopment

WHEN ASML RESEARCHERS MEET THE LEGACY OF LEONARDO DA VINCI ASML is one of the world’s most important manufacturers of chip-making equipment. This week, I was invited to join a workshop with a group of senior engineers from their Research Department. In between their highly technical discussions, I was given three 20-minute slots to explain the importance of The Art of Relaxation. We all know that when we’re in a state of relaxation, we can generate the greatest ideas, and in an environment where we feel safe, we can work together with others to achieve the most challenging goals as a team for our company. Using three self-portraits of Leonardo da Vinci, I suggested that: 1. Every observation (your truth) is about perception and perspective (‘Vitruvian Man’). 🤗 2. Every person has both masculine and feminine characteristics (‘Mona Lisa’). 🤔 3. If you really want something, you’ll DO IT (‘Man in Red Chalk’). 😏 In addition to these lines of ‘food for thought’, all participants experienced how to apply The Art of Relaxation within just a few minutes during each of the three sessions. It’s not hard to relax during a vacation, while skiing in the Alps, or enjoying the beautiful island of Bali. The Art of Relaxation is about bringing yourself and your team into a state of relaxation in an office environment, which will enable you and your team to become more productive in your daily work. That’s what we do at Own Your Life Journeys. The workshop sessions were acknowledged by the senior researchers of ASML with a score of 9.4. 60% of the participants rewarded our sessions with a 10! Every engineer wrote down that they are looking forward to a follow-up session, and so are we. Thank you, ASML. Be kind to yourself and enjoy your day! Innovation thrives when people are empowered. Celebrating recent recognition as Fast Company’s Best Workplace for Innovators, I can’t help but feel proud of what we’ve achieved. It's not solely about leading in AI and robotics—it's about creating a work environment where every individual, regardless of their role, can contribute to and be part of something truly transformative. Did you know that 25% of our workforce is dedicated to R&D? However, innovation happens at all levels. Whether you’re driving AI advancements, shaping our next sustainability initiative, or finding new ways to help businesses thrive in a digital-first world, the opportunities are endless. Every day, I’m reminded of what makes Lenovo an exceptional workplace. It's not just the technology or the accolades—it’s the people. It’s the commitment to empowering talent, fostering collaboration, and supporting an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives drive innovation. We’re looking for the next generation of leaders, engineers, and visionaries who want to make a meaningful impact. If you're passionate about shaping the future of technology and being part of an organisation that truly values innovation and collaboration, I’d love to hear from you. #TechTalent #FutureOfWork #TopEmployer

Nvidia recently became the world's most valuable company. What I find very interesting is their focus on promoting leadership in equity, driving women's participation in technology. Some of the most relevant points in their strategy are: 1️⃣ Women in Technology programs: boosting women's careers in technology. 2️⃣ GPU Technology conferences: including prominent female speakers in the field of technology. 3️⃣ Partnership with Women In tech Organizations: promoting education, training and networking. 4️⃣ Recognition and awards: monitoring and promoting the achievements of its female employees. I am excited to know that at Great Plan we have a very similar approach to the path that NVIDIA has taken, where our programs feature a combination of education, training, panels and guest speakers, stakeholder engagement strategies and networking inside and outside the organization. #GreatPlan #Nvidia #Leadership #womenleadership #training
