Did you know that OHTA was formed in 2009 as a not-for-profit organization offering an international training program and qualifications framework in IH/OH? OHTA has an impressive history, but there is still more to do. Data from Lloyd and Gallup in 2019 indicated that there are 340 million occupational accidents and 160 million work-related illnesses each year due in part to the lack of adequately trained occupational hygiene professionals. Fellow Occupational Hygienists what are you thoughts on the following relating to DEEE exposure: HSG178 'Control of diesel engine exhaust emissions in the workplace' states that there is no formal requirement for health surveillance and that employees should discuss the problem with management. I understand that this is up to interpretation and management could easily put health surveillance in place if they deem it necessary, but they could also argue that the guidance says it's not necessary. I find it strange that substances such as RCS, welding fume and isocyanates have clear suggestions in their guidance that health surveillance should be implemented, but for DEEE this is not the case, even though DEEE is a potential carcinogenic and has also been linked to asthma-like symptoms.

Hi Mary, thank you for your thought provoking article. I thoroughly agree with your overall tenet that control is more important than sampling (those who have had the misfortune to hear me preach will understand). However, in my couple of years’ experience there are far more effective and cost efficient ways (I believe we also have a moral duty in this respect) of achieving improved controls. Firstly you gave a very good example of a client ringing you with limited knowledge. The person you are speaking to is obviously resistant to anything except sampling (not unusual). Dead horse flogging comes to mind and you will probably lose that client to a cheap pump jockey. You mention a pre-site visit. Unless this is a major project I think this is not necessary. Would the cost of a pre-site visit be added to the client’s bill, which might be better spent on LEV? oops ..exceeded max character limit ..more to follow
