A recent study concluded that 52 percent of students with bachelor’s degrees are underemployed one year after graduation. There were several conversations that mentioned mentorships and apprenticeships as a solution for public #transportation to recruit and retain the next generation of leaders. Pathways to Purpose is organized around four themes designed to connect students with post-secondary opportunities including: - Exposing students to colleges, careers and businesses. - Equipping students with soft skills, leadership and financial literacy training. - Empowering students with college and career mentoring, social-emotional support, career and personality assessments and ACT/SAT prep sessions. - Engaging students in internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships and community college events. The goal for each graduating student is that they secure post-secondary placement by enrolling in either college, military, or trade school. By earning a diploma and receiving preparedness training while in high school, students are more likely to earn admittance into post-secondary opportunities and succeed once enrolled. The post-secondary placement rate for Elevate Pathways to Purpose students is 73% higher than the average rate for non-Elevate students. https://lnkd.in/eMvxddYx

I found a survey by Jobs for the Future (JFF) that highlights a significant gap in high school career education, particularly for students pursuing careers that don't require a college degree. What it tells us is that nearly one-third of non-college-bound youth lack confidence in understanding the steps needed to transition into post-high school careers. Additionally, two-thirds would have considered pathway programs if they had more information about them. Why do they feel that way? First there's a prevailing societal emphasis on four-year college degrees as the primary route to success, often overshadowing vocational training and skilled trades. Second, many high schools face resource constraints, limiting their ability to offer comprehensive career and technical education (CTE) programs. There's also a shortage of qualified CTE teachers, making it a challenge to provide students with the necessary guidance and training. For people in manufacturing and the trades seeking to fill open roles, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. By creating outreach programs with local schools to provide apprenticeships, internships, and informational sessions, industries can bridge this educational gap. Such partnerships not only equip students with practical skills but also highlight viable career paths outside of the traditional college trajectory. Bridging these gaps is crucial for developing a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of today's job market. #SkilledTrades #CareerEducation #WorkforceDevelopment

We wrap up National Apprenticeship Week with a spotlight on Hailey Parker, an Air Force veteran and college graduate whose story is a testament to the power of strong benefits in attracting women to the construction industry. Hailey had many career options open to her when she chose to become an apprentice with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 43 in Syracuse. She wanted a guaranteed job — and she wanted insurance. The apprenticeship gave her both.
