Homelessness is a complex and seemingly intractable issue in the United States. There are thousands of organizations across the country, large and small, that are dedicated to confronting it. What do they have in common? They're often run by passionate and dedicated people. They're usually underfunded. They're dependent on private donations and government funding, and due to the government funding, they're part of something called the Continuum of Care (COC), and the COC is something of a bureaucratic super-being that is impossible to comprehend by normal human beings. Want to get a taste of what I'm talking about? Exhibit A is the latest newsletter from the Guilford County (NC) COC, linked below. It's a very good, informative newsletter that makes sense to its intended audience. The point isn't that it's bad, just that it is a great example of the complexity of the system that has been created to deal with homelessness across the country. Honestly, I shudder to think about how much time those passionate and dedicated people trying to help the homeless have to spend navigating the morass that is The System. Imagine the power of one small act of empathy, multiplied a thousand times. When I started The Give Back Community, It was a mission rooted in changing the lives of those we were serving. Such as our homeless friends or our kids suffering from disabilities and challenging backgrounds. But what I didn’t foresee was the depth of transformation that would ripple even more through the lives of those volunteering with us and through my own life too. Since 2020, → We’ve been on a journey, → Starting with feeding the homeless in West Palm Beach and → Growing into a full-scale support system for vulnerable communities, → Like the children at our school in Morro dos Prazeres/ Rio de Janeiro. With dedicated teachers, local partnerships, and a hunger to make a difference, We’ve now impacted thousands of lives across multiple countries. But our goal goes beyond food or education. → We’re here to inspire an entire generation, → Especially Gen Z, → To live lives of purpose, → Community, and service. The result? Kids who once saw only struggle are now building dreams. Communities once overlooked are now empowered. And people from all walks of life are finding the strength to be part of something bigger than themselves. Our work isn’t easy, But each smile, each life touched, reminds us why this matters. Reflections on Giving Back, Compassion, and Changing Times Yesterday, I spent the morning helping the local Rotary Club sell raffle tickets at Bunnings to support youth initiatives and projects. Being the first time, It was an interesting experience that left me reflecting on the nature of generosity, connection, and how times are changing. I noticed that the majority of those who stopped to purchase tickets or make donations were from an older generation. Many shared heartfelt stories of how Rotary had supported them or their loved ones through difficult times. They wanted to give back or “pay it forward” to help others in need. At the same time, I observed that many people walked past the table without a glance—a stark contrast to those who stopped to engage. This made me reflect on how societal priorities and attitudes toward community giving may be shifting, and it’s a reminder of how important it is to foster connection and compassion in our increasingly fast-paced lives. These reflections tie closely to two incredible opportunities I had in 2018-2019: 1. The Churchill Fellowship, where I examined peer support programs to reduce mental health challenges in emergency service volunteers. 2. The NSW Health Judith Meppem Scholarship, where I explored how to grow and sustain compassionate workplace cultures. Both experiences reinforced the importance of creating spaces—whether in the workplace or the broader community—where compassion, kindness, and mutual support can thrive. Whether it’s through volunteering, leadership, or simply taking a moment to connect with someone, I remain committed to growing environments where people feel valued and supported, especially those facing struggle and distress.
