Latest transport news..... An independent transport reviewer is set to be named in the coming weeks following the announcement by mayor Richard Parker to look at all current projects in the region. It is anticipated that the initial findings will be available in the Autumn. A Rail and Urban Transport Review has called on the West Midlands to work with other regions and the private sector to create a UK network fit for the next fifty years. The panel highlighted the Midlands Rail Hub for praise as being "a transformational project of national significance". The consultation process of Birmingham City Council’s plans to reduce most 40mph roads in the city to 30mph saw 56.7% people oppose the plans and 37.9% support them. The remaining people had a neutral view. National Express and West Midlands operator Mobico has seen progress towards becoming more profitable as a result of an 8% increase in passenger numbers and some fare cost increases. #transport #rail #bus #roads

Silvertown Tunnel Toll Proposals Approved On 4 December 2024, Transport for London (TfL) approved the toll proposals for the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels, finalizing the charges, discounts, and exemptions ahead of the Silvertown Tunnel's opening in Spring 2025. The decision was shaped by the responses from over 5,000 participants in a public consultation held between July and September 2024. This feedback helped TfL refine its approach, balancing congestion management, equitable access, and environmental goals. Under the new scheme, charges will apply from 06:00 to 22:00 daily, with off-peak rates starting at £1.50 for cars, motorcycles, and small vans registered with Auto Pay. Peak charges will manage traffic during rush hours, while travel between 22:00 and 06:00 will remain free. To support residents, small businesses, and low-income households, TfL is introducing a 50% discount for eligible residents across 12 London boroughs and the City of London. Public transport improvements, including zero-emission buses and free cross-river journeys on selected routes, will further ease the transition. Applications for discounts and exemptions will open in early 2025. TfL remains committed to delivering a fair and sustainable tolling system to improve London's connectivity. First, light rail to Matthews was too expensive. Now the so-called solution – bus rapid transit - might not work either? A review of the city’s plans and finances — as well as plans already put in place by the N.C. Department of Transportation — raises questions about whether BRT is feasible along the U.S. 74 corridor. The city doesn’t know where a dedicated bus lane would go. “So what we will end up with are big fancy buses sitting in traffic with cars,” said Renee Garner of the Matthews Board of Commissioners at a meeting last week. “And Matthews will be paying for it.” The N.C. Department of Transportation is adding express toll lanes in the middle of the Highway 74 and a future project would extend them to Matthews. In theory, those lanes would be perfect for BRT because traffic is guaranteed to move at a high speed, around 45 or 55 mph. But there is no place to put the stations. Building BRT lanes in the same path planned for light rail would be more cost effective than a train but would still require the city to buy land and build new lanes and bridges over existing roads, as well as stations and parking decks. CONNECTING IN WATERFORD: A new county-state funding agreement will provide MetroConnect on-demand transit in the Waterford area through June 30, 2025. The county and the state will pay $345,600 apiece to River North Transit LLC to run the service, which is to have two to three minivans during peak hours and two in off-peak times driving flexible routes with rides provided within 15 minutes of the call and operating primarily as a feeder to other modes of transportation. MetroConnect now has 11 such service zones producing more than 1,000 total rides per weekday. The on-demand transit is to serve a 5-square-mile area, and while other service is possible, links to transit are prioritized, with the aim of linking to the Miami Intermodal Center and the Flagler Corridor. MetroConnect launched in the county in October 2020. https://lnkd.in/dSHD_Stk #FYIMiami #MiamiTodayNews

Grand Central has submitted its application to the rail regulator, the Office for Rail and Road (ORR), to extend its track access rights in Yorkshire and the North East beyond 2027. If approved, this will secure Grand Central’s long-term future in the region.
